  1. The Freytag Pyramid The Ups & Downs of Story Telling

  2. Gustav Freytag Born on July 13, 1816 in Kreuzburg and died April 30, 1895 in Wiesbaden, Gustav Freytag was a German novelist and a playwright. At an early age Freytag, who was obsessed on reading books & excelled in his studies in both Latin and Greek and received and received a diploma in 1835. While analyzing ancient Greek and Shakespeare’s drama, Gustav Freytag came up with the Dramatic structure, also named the Freytag Pyramid in 1863.

  3. The Exposition (The Set Up) is the beginning or setting. It sets up the 5 W’s – The who, what, why, where & when What are the relationships?

  4. The Inciting Incident is the initial problem that really begins the story. It creates the questions that will be answered in the CLIMAX of the story Also known as The 1st Conflict.

  5. The Rising Action is the main part of the story (Act I & II) where the problem rises and escalates; .

  6. SOLILOQUY The act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play. MONOLOGUE A long speech made by one person

  7. External Conflict – struggle between a character & an outside force (man vs society, man vs man, man vs nature)nature Internal Conflict – struggle that takes place inside a character’s mind – maybe in a soliloquy)

  8. The Climax is the point of highest suspense in a play.

  9. Resolution is the part of the story's plot line in which the problem of the story is resolved or worked out. This occurs after the falling action and is typically where the story ends.

  10. The Denouement is where all the secrets (if there are any) are revealed and loose ends are tied up. The possible future is revealed in some cases.

  11. A movie…simple enough… • Pick an animated (Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks) movie or fairytale and plot it out on the Freytag Pyramid using all plot points. • For each plot point – Write the name of the Plot Point &1-2 sentence summary of part of the movie • Present to the class. • You have 20 minutes.
