Teaching level: • Primary School children (10-12) Learning Objectives: • Describe how a greenhouse works • Explain why the earth can be described as a big greenhouse • Scientific literacy regarding the greenhouse effect.
Strategies • Whole class learning • Collaborative group work (Jigsaw) • Paired discussion • Paired group work • Field work
Teaching Models • Constructivism • Discovery based learning • Student centred • Differentiated learning
Procedure LESSON 1: • Materials: video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBQ8-zEcE9w&feature=player_embeddedphotographs, articles • Method: The first lesson will be a whole class lesson where the children are introduced to the greenhouse effect. The children will learn the basic facts of the greenhouse effect. They will go into paired discussions with their partners at various stages.
LESSON 2: • Materials: pen, paper, thermometers, questionnaire. • Method: The second lesson will be in the form of a field trip to a greenhouse. The children will learn how the greenhouse operates and can pose questions to the farmer regarding its function. The children will also take the temperature outside and inside the greenhouse and compare the readings.
LESSON 3: • Materials: recycling materials (e.g. plastic, plastic bottles etc), straws, lollipop sticks, glue, scissors, cling-film. • Method: The children will work in pairs to construct a model greenhouse from the materials provided.
LESSON 4: • Materials:books, articles, internet, pictures, poster paper, markers. • Method: The children will make a project on the greenhouse effect in groups of three using the Jigsaw Method. The children will research the topic under the headings of Causes, Effects, Possible Solutions. In their groups they will construct a poster based on these headings. The posters will be mounted on the wall for display.
Learning Outcomes • Know what causes the greenhouse effect • Know some of the side effects and solutions of the greenhouse effect • Social interaction in discussing the topic • Build a model greenhouse
Evaluation We can evaluate their understanding and their enjoyment of the topic: • Based on the children’s posters. • Based on the models made. • Based on the field trip.
