  2. Germans took over… • Austria (peacefully) • Neville Chamberlain appeased Hitler and let him have part of Czechoslovakia

  3. Germans took over… • Poland using Blitzkrieg tactics • Germany & U.S.S.R. secretly split Poland • Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium

  4. Germans took over… • France (by going around the “Maginot” Line) • British and French troops fled to Britain

  5. Stalin (USSR) took over… • Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (the Baltic States) • Parts of Finland (but the Nazis later invaded)

  6. Battle of Britain • 1940, Germany begins bombing Britain • Germany wanted to weaken them enough to be able invade Britain by sea • The Royal Air Force (RAF) had a secret weapon- radar to spot German planes coming in • Hitler cancelled his invasion plans, both sides continued to bomb each other’s cities
