Accessing, creating and modifying computer files is a common activity • File • A block of arbitrary information or resource for storing information which is available to a computer program • Remains available for programs to use after the current program is finished
There are hundreds of different types of files on a computer • File type of file is indicated by the file extension • .doc Microsoft Word • .xls Microsoft Excel • .pdf Adobe PDF file • .exe Program Executable • Software programs are designed to open specific types of files
Folders provide structure and are used to organize a computer system • Folder • A named location in memory where files are stored • Provides organization and structure • Can be created or deleted by user • Identified by a folder icon and folder name Folder Icon Folder Name

When starting a computer the welcome screen is usually the first screen you will see which requires user input • The welcome screen allows you to • Choose which user profile you will access • Often times this may require entering a password • The password on these computers is UTGSTUDENT or utgstudent • The password is case sensitive • Shut off or restart the computer • After the welcome screen you will usually move to the desktop environment (DE)
There are several ways to navigate through a computer from the DE • Desktop icons • Task bar icons • Shortcut keys • Command shell (CMD.exe) • Start menu – Allows you to access objects on the computer and contains commands that allow you to connect to and browse the internet, start an email program, start application programs, store and search for documents, customize a computer and obtain help on thousands of topics.
The Start menu is separated into two columns of commands Right arrows indicate that pointing to the command will display a submenu Most frequently used programs All Programs command Log off, turn off or restart computer
Point to All Programs on the Start menu to display the All Programs submenu
Practice Activity • Locate the “My Computer” icon on both • The computer desktop • The start menu • Open this icon • What do you see? • Locate and open the “My Documents” icon • Most operating systems come with a basic folder structure already created for ease of use
What are some other folder navigation features that help the user interact with the computer? The address bar allows you to quickly determine your location within the computer
Review and Practice of Standard Computer Activities • Minimize and redisplay a window • Maximize and restore down a window • Resize a window by dragging • Move a window by dragging • Close a window
Review and Practice of Standard Computer Activities • Open the My Documents folder using the desktop icon • Collapse and expand a detail area on the left pane of a window • Scroll using scroll arrows • Delete a desktop icon • Create a desktop icon
Folder and File Manipulation • Within the My Documents folder create a new folder with the name “CPS 111” • Within the “CPS 111” folder create a folder with the name “CPS 111 Section 1” • Open Microsoft Word and save a file titled “MSWord Test” to the “CPS 111 Section 1” folder • Do not close the Microsoft Word document
Folder and File Manipulation • Try to rename the “CPS 111 Section 1” folder to “CPS 111 Section 2” • What happens if the MSWord file is open? Closed? • Why does this happen? • Close MS Word and rename the “CPS 111 Section 1” folder to “CPS 111 Section 2”
Folder and File Manipulation • Move the “CPS 111 Section 2” to the same location as the “CPS 111” folder • Delete the “CPS 111” folder • Rename the MSWord file to “Rename Testing” • Delete the “CPS 111 Section 2” folder • What happened to the MSWord document?
Can you Answer the Following Questions? • In what folder would you look to locate information: • Stored on your hard drive? • On a USB or CD? • How do you create, delete, change the name of or move a folder? • What about a file? • Can you identify which programs open which basic files? • E.g. .doc, .ppt, .xls, .pdf
