EXPERIENCING THE MODULES: Instructional Practices and Scaffolds that help students read and comprehend complex text
LT 4a. I can analyze text for its complexity using both quantitative and qualitative measures. LT 4c. I can analyze the role of specific practices and scaffolds in helping all students read and comprehend complex texts.
Analyzing the scaffolds to help students access complex text: within a lesson Directions: • Select lesson 3 and 4. • Examine the lessons for practices and scaffolds that support students in accessing the text. Be sure to look at the “Meeting Students’ Needs” column. • How might these serve as a model for scaffolding in other parts of the module? How would this work for a longer piece of text (novel/informational text)? • Capture practices on your Text Complexity Recording Form.
Gradients in Complexity Directions: • Locate the “Gradients in Complexity: Informational” (Day 4) • Discuss with a table partner: • What do you notice? • What do you wonder?
Analyzing text using the Gradient Directions: • Read Congressional Resolution 331 • Use the “Gradients in Complexity: Informational” to analyze the text. • Discuss with a table partner: What does your analysis reveal? What questions do you have?
Applying our Knowledge: Scaffolding a Complex Text Directions: • Reread the complex text. • Outline instructional moves you might make to scaffold this text. • Use the scaffolding practices you noticed in Module 1 as a model.
Share and Debrief Directions: At tables Share your ideas for scaffolding this text. How has your thinking about the power of complex text for intermediate learners changed or been affirmed over the course of your work?
Back to our learning targets • LT 4a. I can analyze text for its complexity using both quantitative and qualitative measures. • LT 4c. I can analyze the role of specific practices and scaffolds in helping all students read and comprehend complex texts.
