Fun Facts • The word ‘junk’ comes from the Javanese word ‘jong’ • In 1955, a junk was lost at sea for four months and after surviving typhoons and such their boat made it back safely on film.
Physical Pros • It’s almost impossible to sink, due to its large rudder which keeps it from flipping over • Unlike sailboats, junks have sails that are more flexible, so as not to tear • You can easily navigate a junk even without a compass, it usually is never off course.
Multipurposes • The ship is easy to live on because it won’t tip over and it has watertight compartments • The bulkhead is good for fishing, for if you fill it with water, you can store fish fresh
Other stuff you need to know • Sailboats only have one sail, junks have three to four! • Sailboats have traditional square shaped rigging, while junks have inward moving sails • Sailboats need wind or they won’t move, junks can adjust their sails to catch the wind
History on Junks • Junks were invented and created by the Chinese, back in 220 B.C. • The famous explorer, Zheng He used junks to show the world China’s power
