Learning Objectives • Discuss methods to transition and change. • Identify elements that create a welcoming environment. • Recognize strategies to overcome barriers for a welcoming environment.
Is the Only Constant Change? While change appears to be ongoing, it is actually a snapshot in time. It is the transition, mentally and emotionally, that is longer in duration. Until the change is embraced physically, mentally and emotionally, there is no beginning of the new (vision). - Based on Bill Bridges work
Transition Is… • That place of in between. • Not knowing what will happen next. • Preferring the status quo. • Unsettling, worrisome, anxiety-provoking. • Having one foot in the past and one partially in the future.
Transition Is Also… • A chance to let go. • An opportunity to be innovative. • A time to take a deep breath. • A time to re-invigorate. • A time to be.
Transition Is A Time To… • Clarify information about the new vision. • Ask how each other are feeling about the new vision. • Ask for each other’s thoughts about the change at work. • Be there to encourage each other. • Communicate, communicate, communicate.
Transition is Now Group Activity: • Think of the last major change at work. • Name the change. • Discuss the transition: a. Feelings b. Thoughts c. What worked well d. What could have worked better

A Few Words • An agency that is open, flexible, values diversity, views clients as competent and significant contributors, and includes consumers in decision making are just a of the attributes that lead to an organizational culture that’s supports consumers as providers.
Cafe Dyad Group Activity: • Form dyad groups. • Determine who will be partner “A” and who will be partner “B” in your dyad. • Follow your instructor’s instructions.
Cafe Dyad Responses Respond to the following questions: • What were your initial thoughts as you entered the room? • What were your feelings or emotions as you were greeted?
The Sense of Feeling Welcomed In groups of three, respond to the following: • What makes you feel welcomed in any situation? • What makes you feel welcomed at work? • What do you think would make consumers and families feel welcome in your workplace?
Four Barriers to Feel Welcome BARRIER #1: • A security guard that is present. BARRIER #2: • Deciding to use metal detectors to provide safety and security. BARRIER #3: • Multiple posted signs depicting rules and regulations telling consumers what they cannot do. BARRIER #4: • Locking a door causing separation between team members and consumers between the entry of waiting room and service area.
Removing the Barriers Thinking of your workplace, respond to the following questions on your handout: • What strategies would you use to remove the barriers? • Do such barriers exist in your workplace? • What would need to occur if such barriers exist?

Making Cafe Dyad Successful • Form small groups of three. • Referring to the handout, provide specific examples beneath each subtitle in which you and your work colleagues can provide a welcoming environment to consumers and their families.

Agency Barometer On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest, mark the easel papers in response to the following: • How welcoming is the agency today? • How welcoming do you believe the agency will be 1 year after being a working partner with consumers/families?
Share-Outs to Leaders In the previous discussion, what items are important for you to share with the agency’s leaders? Prepare a single list from the entire class to be given to the administrator.
Personal Barometer On the index card in front of you: • Write one item you could do to help the agency provide a more welcoming environment to the consumer and family partner. • Write one change you can personally make to provide a more welcoming environment.
The New Beginning In your groups of three, create the following: • Develop a motto or saying that depicts a welcoming environment in the context of the new vision. 2. Share the motto or saying with the class.
