  1. Is There a God? Rebuttal

  2. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence • Plausible ordinary explanations are sufficient to refute extraordinary claims.

  3. Cosmological Argument • Whatever begins must have a cause. • The universe had a beginning. • Therefore, the universe must have had a cause.

  4. Physical particles begin to exist without cause. Not everything that begins has a cause Nuclear Decay

  5. The Cyclic Universe Is the big bang evidence that the universe had a beginning? The universe need not have begun with the big bang.

  6. Does an infinite universe have a beginning? If the universe is infinitely old, then it had no beginning - not a beginning infinitely long ago.

  7. Einstein: Time is what you read on a clock. Forward time 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, . . . ticks Never reach infinite time. Backward time 0,-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, . . . ticks Never reach minus infinite time. Universe can be finite and still not have a beginning

  8. Is the universe fine-tuned for life? • Some other kind of life could exist with different physics.

  9. Argument from improbability • The universe and life are too improbable to be solely natural.

  10. The improbable happens • Must compare probabilities. • P(natural) / P(supernatural) = ? • Low probability events happen every day. What is the probability that William Lane Craig exists?

  11. Why should nothing be more natural than something? How could “nothing” even exist? Why is there God rather than nothing? Why is there something, rather than nothing?

  12. Genesis confirmed? • Does modern cosmology confirm the Biblical view of creation?

  13. Light left quasar 12 billion years ago. What does Genesis actually say? Earth created before sun, moon, and stars. Universe is about 6,000 years old. Genesis falsified

  14. Objective morality • Objective morality exists and must come from God.

  15. Subjective morality • Not everyone shares the same morals.

  16. Is the Gospel historical? • Do Gospel stories describe actual historical events? • The Empty Tomb

  17. The Empty Tomb • No evidence outside of Bible. • Eyewitness testimony is unreliable. Somebody took the body! Napoleon’s Tomb

  18. Personal experience of God • Can one know God exists by personal experience? • Subjective. Not everyone shares that experience.

  19. No evidence for God • Plausible natural explanations exist for all phenomena in the universe. • God is not required to explain the universe.
