Polymer Networks Containing Reversibly Associating Side-GroupsMitchell Anthamatten, University of Rochester, DMR 0906627 Architecture Matters: Dynamic Mechanical Properties Polymers bearing multiple-hydrogen bonding side-groups exhibit unique viscoelastic properties and are enabling new approaches to shape memory polymers, self-healing interfaces, and thermoplastic elastomers. To explore how polymer architecture impacts shape memory properties, we synthesized and characterized a series of polymers bearing different amounts of thermo-reversible and photo-crosslinkable side-groups. We discovered that the presence of a chemically crosslinked network strongly supports cooperative reversible binding of side-groups. This finding will spur development of shape memory elastomers with stronger recovery forces. Shape Memory Response: shape setting (temporary shape is stable for minutes…) (immersionin hot water) fast, thermally triggered, shape-recovery (60 °C) Macromolecules2011, 44, 5336–5343
