Paris is always a good idea - The movie "Sabrina" I am French only by this great city: the glory of France, and one of the noblest ornaments of the world.-Michel de Montaigne If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.- Ernest Hemingway In America only the successful writer is important, in France all writers are important, in England no writer is important, and in Australia you have to explain what a writer is."-Geoffrey Cottrell
America is my country and Paris is my hometown - Gertrude Stein I like Frenchmen very much, because even when they insult you they do it so nicely.-Josephine Baker The Frenchman is first and foremost a man. He is likeable often just because of his weaknesses, which are always thoroughly human, even if despicable.-Henry Miller The best of America drifts to Paris. The American in Paris is the best American. It is more fun for an intelligent person to live in an intelligent country. France has the only two things toward which we drift as we grow older—intelligence and good manners.-F. Scott Fitzgerald

Roma • Although the Romani people are often referred to as "Gypsies" (and prefer to be called by their more proper designation, Roma), not all "gypsies" or nomadic peoples are Roma. The Roma are descendants of the ancient warrior classes of Northern India, particularly the Punjab, and they are identifiable by their language, religion, and customs, which can be directly linked to those of the Punjabi in northern India. http://www.romani.org/
Roma • Probably originated in India; migrated to Europe in the 14th century • Considered to be nomadic travelers; though some are sedentary • Common impression – entertainers, fortune tellers, and hoop earrings • Many live in poverty in temporary camps

On the downside • Early on, French had attitude of assimilate or not – but now the threat of extremists • France has about 7 million immigrants out of 60 million population • 5 times more likely to be unemployed if of Arabic or African origin • Children of immigrants feel system has failed them www.timesonline.co.uk Power, Carla, et al.
