  1. NEWINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Course Selection Process for Class of 2018

  2. PURPOSE To provide you with sufficient information so that you and your teen can select courses which are challenging, but not overwhelming; and courses which are of interest and which help broaden one’s perspectives and skills.

  3. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES Minimum number of credits/courses per year increases from 5 to 6. 2. Beginning with the class of 2018, graduation requirements will increase from 21 credits to 25 credits

  6. IN ADDITION…. TECHNOLOGY and SPEAKING & LISTENING: Skills will be assessed by school-wide rubrics. STUDENT SUCCESS PLANS: To be completed over the course of Grades 9-12 in Advisory and through the School Counseling Program.

  7. THREE ACADEMIES: 2 – INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY and DIGITAL INNOVATION 1 – CULINARY and HOSPITALITY 3 – FINANCE and BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ACADEMY

  8. Students who complete at least 5 courses in one Academy will be eligible to participate in an intensive internship. ALL STUDENTS CAN TAKE ACADEMY COURSES.

  15. GROUPINGS: Academic and Honors In core academic subject areas, students are assigned into different levels of difficulty. This is determined by: • Academic performance • Teacher recommendation • Standardized tests • Levels are not mutually exclusive

Academic vs. Honors In general, honors classes are for students who: • Are curious learners with a history of excellent performance • Can work independently • Can master material covered at a faster pace and in greater depth • Demonstrate an excellent work ethnic • Can manage their time effectively

  17. GRADE POINT AVERAGES(GPA) Honors classes get more weight when determining GPA. An ‘A’ in academic English 9 is worth 4.0 quality points. An ‘A’ in honors English 9 is worth 4.2 quality points.

LANGUAGE NHS OFFERS FOUR (4) LANGUAGES • FRENCH • SPANISH • ITALIAN • LATIN • World Language is an NHS graduation requirement. • 2 – 3 years of the same language IS required by most colleges for entry. • French & Spanish are offered through the AP Level • Italian & Latin are offered through the 4th year
