Tet Offensive Started January 31, 1968 Hit 134 separate towns, cities, and autonomous states
Protesters • On May, 4th, 1970 four students were shot and killed during a protest at Kent State University. • Nine others were wounded. • The shots were fired by the US National Guard.
Hanoi Bombing • From December 18th to the 30th US B-52s dropped bombs on the city of Hanoi • Even on Christmas • This is one of the many bombings. • Over 3 million tons of bombs were dropped during the Vietnam War. • That’s two times the amount dropped on Germany during WW2.
Nixon Doctrine • Also known as the Guam Doctrine. • Nixon stated that: • The US will keep all of its treaty agreements • We shall provide a shield if a nuclear power threatens the freedom of a nation allied with us or a nation whose survival we consider vital to our security
Vietnamization • Nixon proposed a plan that the South Vietnamese take more responsibility fighting the war. • This would allow US troops to start withdrawing. • In June of 1969 the first US withdrew from Vietnam.
The Agreement • The agreement that ended the Vietnam war was signed in January, 27th, 1973. • It stated that: • All POW’s would be released • South Vietnam was one country with two government’s • American troops would leave Vietnam • North Vietnamese forces troops would remain in South Vietnam
POW’s • There were nearly 600 US airmen captured during Vietnam. • They were held in what was called the Hanoi Hilton. • There were also many North Vietnamese POW’s. • After the agreement was signed they were released. • As they were crossing the river into North Vietnam they discarded all the clothes they were given by the South Vietnamese.
