Zebrafish Project !!! • Use the zebrafish • set up genetic experiment • study embryonic development
Facts about Zebrafish • Habitat- India, and Burma. In Ganges River • Life span 2-4 years • Grows to approximately 1 ½ inches • Diet- brine shrimp, smaller fish, insect larvae • Predators- larger fish, birds, snakes, frogs • Able to regenerate fins and other body parts
Why use zebrafish in research?(a good Model Organism) • Embryos are see through (can see organs and cells) • Have similar organs as humans • Inexpensive - $1.00 per fish • Easy to care for • Produce lots of offspring • Short lifespan (2 years)
Each Group • Fill the breeding tanks 1/2 full with water from the containers set up by the tanks (Do not use tap water) • Use nets to get 1 male and 1 female zebrafish and place the fish in your breeding tank • Label your tank with tape: -Your names -Names of your fish -Phenotye of your fish -Number of tanks that you got the male and female from
Scientific Problem • The pigmentation that offspring have depends on the genes passed down from their parents. • What will the offspring of your zebrafish cross look like? • Take a few minutes to discuss with your partner. Draw a Punnettsquare to justify your hypothesis and include it in your manual.
Your Investigation!! • Cross fish and observe what the offspring look like • Record cross in your lab manual • Observe the embryonic development throughout the week
