According to Lama Surya Das Wisdom is an endangered natural resource today, in our agitated and benighted world. We overlook and ignore it at our peril. Wisdom is as wisdom does. One would be foolish if enlightened only from the eyebrows up. Wisdom is the panacean pearl of great price and priceless too. Wisdom can be developed and it can also be awakened within us. Working from both ends or sides—from outside in, or from top down as well as from bottom up, swooping while climbing—we can gradually explore, develop and attain discerning wisdom through information and learning, first; then investigation and inquiry, analysis, reflection and contemplation; leading progressively to greater conceptual understanding, self-awareness and application (in daily life); integration, realization, illumination, gnosis, and ultimately “the wisdom which surpasses understanding”.
Meanwhile, we can attend mindfully to things and relations, causes and effects in such a way as to awaken our direct intuition and an instantaneous, unmediated (by thought and concept) holistic grasp of the entire situation. As the ancient Chinese saying goes: She who knows the world has knowledge, she who knows herself is wise. According to Buddhism - wisdom? The superior wisdom is seeing that in reality all phenomena are incomplete, temporary and not self. This comprehension is totally freeing and conduct to the great security and happiness which is called Nirvana. True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves and the world around us. The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. Wisdom is that which directs information toward good--toward the creation of value.
When wisdom is working in our life, it has the effect of allow us to overcome the established views of our habitual thinking and arrive at a fresh and holistic view of a given situation. We are able to make a wide evaluation of the facts, find the essence of an issue and steer a sure way toward happiness. Wisdom dissipates our delusions of separateness and awakens in us a sense of empathetic equality with all living things. Ways to Get Wisdom The wisdom that comes from above is pure, peaceable, kindly and considerate, it is compassionate and shows itself by the good it does not is there any trace of partiality in it.Purity - Wisdom will remove dross. It will simplify and raise value. A pure idea is, like any precious metal, worth more than a mixed alloy.
Peaceable - It will calm things down. Kindly and considerate - Wisdom will leave other people feeling heard and understood. Its purpose is to build community. Compassionate - It will forgive. It doesn't catalogue failure. It accepts people and gives second chances. Shows itself by the good it does. It is about outcomes. Impartiality - Wisdom will honor difference. It will get value out of diversity. No hypocrisy in it - Wisdom is the real deal! It isn't trying to make a hard sell or hoodwink anyone.
