Welcome!!!! • Current enrollment 459 • Approximately 57%of our students are neighborhood and 43% are magnet focus, meaning they applied through the lottery and come from all over the city. • Since this is an arts focus, teachers are trained to integrate arts into the classroom curriculum. Also, students get additional hours (4 periods, 2 are half classes) with their arts specialist which changes each quarter, in six week rotations. Arts classes include Dance, Visual Arts, Drama, and Music. 5th graders also have performance lab on Wednesdays. A fifth push in rotational classes will be offered this year • Students get PE weekly with their teacher and opportunities to swim with their class • We have a wonderfully vital SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods ) and Vermont Hills Daycare • Our volunteerism is one of the highest in the District. We are very fortunate to have strong parent volunteers, community and corporate sponsorships/partnerships • Buckman has received an Outstanding grade by the State of Oregon for the fourth year

Elementary and Secondary Education Act10 out of PPS’ 81 schools gained a 5 rating (Ainsworth Elementary, Beverly Cleary K-8, Bridlemile Elementary, Buckman Elementary, Chapman Elementary, Duniway Elementary, Laurelhurst K-8, West Sylvan MS, Woodstock Elementary). Three charters also gained Level 5 ratings: Portland Arthur Academy, Emerson and Opal. While no PPS schools received a “model” designation, Buckman Elementary and Chapman Elementary schools earned a level 5 ranking and serve a higher percentage of students in poverty than schools receiving the designation in other districts. More than 30 percent of students at each school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. However, neither school was recognized because the Title 1 funding threshold in PPS is 60 percent – and the “model” designation only applies to Title 1 schools.
Assessments Our students in K-2 are assessed quarterly by teachers 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are tested by the State in reading, math, and science for 5th grade. All must complete work samples in speaking, language arts, math, science, and writing.
Writing • Every grade has a school-wide plan for writing, which is our weakest area. There is no one specific writing program but we are focusing our efforts on boys since girls are outperforming boys in writing 2 to 1. As a school we are using two writing strategies, mentor texts and anchor charts. We are in our second year as the recipients of the Nike PLC grant to support our writing goals • Writing improvement is our main academic goal in our School Improvement Plan • Teachers all received training with the Oregon Writing Project and will get continued professional development through demonstration lessons • We developed a writing rubric continuum for each grade, K through 5 designed to make sure we are hitting the areas most needed in each grade • We base our needs on the state writing scores and the strands we are struggling with such as conventions, content, organization, and sentence fluency

Bridges in Mathematics Overview Bridges in Mathematics is a full K-5 curriculum that provides the tools, strategies, and materials teachers need to meet the new common core standards. Developed with initial support from the National Science Foundation, Bridges offers a unique blend of problem-solving and skill building in a clearly articulated program that moves through each grade level with common models, teaching strategies, and objectives. A Bridges classroom features a combination of whole-group, small-group, and independent activities. Lessons incorporate increasingly complex visual models - seeing, touching, working with manipulatives, and sketching ideas - to create pictures in the mind's eye that helps learners invent, understand, and remember mathematical ideas. By encouraging students to explore, test, and justify their reasoning, the curriculum facilitates the development of mathematical thinking for students of all learning styles. Written and field-tested by teachers, Bridges reflects an intimate understanding of the classroom environment. Designed for use in diverse settings, the curriculum provides multiple access points allowing teachers to adapt to the needs, strengths, and interests of individual students.
