  2. Purpose • Provides guidelines for assessing rupture of membranes.

  3. Quality Control (QC) • QC is completed each day of use • A 5.0 and 7.0 buffer are run. Acceptable completion must be logged/marked on OB’s daily check off list • Acid, base and paper expiration dates should be checked daily. If the expiration date is close, contact the POC Coordinator in the Laboratory to order more.

  4. QC Continued • If QC fails • Repeat • If repeat fails, throw away paper and try a new box • If third attempt with new paper fails, contact the POC Coordinator in the Laboratory • Do not use paper on patient or report any results

  5. Procedure • Explain procedure to patient • Obtain equipment • Test fluid from vaginal canal with test tape • Read test tape with in 30 seconds

  6. Interpretation • Compare directly to color guide on front of strips • Membranes probably intact • Orange to olive green pH of 5.0 to 6.0 • Membranes probably ruptured • Green to purple pH of 6.5 to 7.5

  7. False Positive Contributing Factors • Heavy vaginal discharge • Blood • Cervical mucus • Semen • Alkaline urine • Soap

  8. False Negative Contributing Factors • Prolonged ruptured membranes (longer than 24 hours) • Small leak of fluid
