SFI® On-Product Label • Approved June 26, 2002 • Expanded requirements • Certified to 2002-04 Standard or 2001 Standard & in material compliance w/ all provisions of 2002-04.
SFI Enhancements 2002-2004 Examples include: • Conservation of critical resources • Strengthened procedures for use of forest chemicals. • Enhance provisions to protect water quality. • Protection of legally designated conservation areas.
SFI Enhancements 2002-2004 Most significant & far-reaching changes - • Requirement to locate and protect “critically imperiled and imperiled species” and communities on PP lands. • Requirement for “verifiable” system for monitoring the flow of raw material from non-industrial private lands.
To Use On-Product Label • Must successfully complete an independent 3rd party certification and comply with the rigorous on-product label use requirements. • Must provide annual 3rd party certified evidence documenting ALL sources of fiber • Must undergo annual surveillance audit.
On-Product Label Oversight • AF&PA SFI Office of Label Use and Licensing • evaluates and approves application • serves as depository for certification certificates & documentation • maintains website application process http://sfi.vcompro.com
On-Product Label Process • Provide copy of 3rd party certification paperwork to Office of Label Use & Licensing • Schedule surveillance audit • Meet all label use requirements • Complete application form.
Labeling Program • Four on-product labels available. • One label for “Primary Producers” • Three labels for “Secondary Producers” • Labels account for different types of forest operations.
Receive most of their raw material, “primary sources”, directly from the forest. Manufacturing facility acquires 50% or more of its material from the woods or that sells timber from their own land. “Primary Producers”
Primary Producers Label Primary sources are roundwood (logs or pulpwood), field manufactured- , primary- and mill residual chips.
Primary Producers Criteria To use the label must meet ... • Independent 3rd party certified to SFI Standard (SFIS). • All primary sources certified in compliance w/ SFIS &/or procured through 3rd party certified procurement system. • At least, 1/3 (by weight) of total wood fiber content comes from certified sources
“Secondary Producers” Mills that run largely processed wood, “secondary sources”. • Acquire less than 50% of their raw material from the woods or by entities not eligible for SFI Participation, because they purchase < 5% of their material from the woods. Secondary Sources: Semi-finished solid wood, paper, market pulp, recovered wood fiber, or composite products.
Secondary Producers Criteria To use the label must meet … • At least, 2/3 (by weight) of wood or fiber comes from certified sources • At least, 1/3 (by weight) of total wood fiber content comes from certified sources • Independent 3rd party certified product content qualifies to use label • If only processed wood used (<5%),use label if compliant w/ label use guidelines.
Secondary Producers Labels • Three types • “Participating Manufacturer” • “Participating Publisher” • “Participating Retailer”
“Participating Manufacturer” Produces finished forest products plywood, furniture, windows, doors, cabinets, etc.
Participating Publisher • Produces magazines, publications, catalogs, etc.
Participating Retailer A retailer of wood and paper products.
Chain-of-Custody SFI addresses chain-of-custody through required audits of participant’s procurement systems and extensive logger training and landowner outreach and education program. “auditable system to monitor and evaluate the results of logger training and landowner outreach programs to encourage reforestation and use of BMPs.”
