Graduate Certificate: Higher Ed second year Management Accounting course (Internal mode) Jenny Waters j.waters@business.uq.edu.au
Graduate Certificate: Higher Ed Rational for using Virtual Classroom • Many students were not attending tutorials • Those who did attend were mainly international students (for many this was their first semester at UQ) • The VC offered flexibility in terms of location only as the classes were synchronous • Off campus tutorials could be attractive to “digitally connected” student as well as those who have transportation issues
Graduate Certificate: Higher Ed …and • Domestic students may have been dissatisfied with the learning environment where they had become the unintended under represented group • I was also aware that the level of interactions between the tutor and students and between students was low • The VC environment could encourage interactions in different ways
Graduate Certificate: Higher Ed VC used for tutorials and workshops • VC was not introduced until Week 7 and the number of students who participated was low • I then announced I would run workshops in the VC and that picked up a few more students.
Graduate Certificate: Higher Ed What did I find? • Writing on the white board: a skill to be mastered • managing the share space also requires some practice • Interestingly students preferred to interact with me in text in the chat pod and over time it was great to see students interacting with each other • most were reluctant to use the video camera
Graduate Certificate: Higher Ed How successful was the intervention and would I use Adobe Connect again? • Participation was low • Students (who were attending face to face classes) said they were expecting on-line classes • It appears that students take some time to make a change • The students who did attend the VC said they were happy with the experience
Graduate Certificate: Higher Ed Would I do it again? • Definitely! • In the short term I think the VC would be especially useful for workshops and student consultations • In the longer term I see students choosing a mix of on campus and on-line courses. • I have attached the write up (including evaluation) of my intervention. • I am happy to talk to others about my experience and also give you more feedback if you need it.
