Where to from here? “Leadership to do the job” PDG Harold R.Ott MD 14 Leadership Development Chairperson
You are the LEADERSHIP! • District Governors • Vice District Governors • District MERLOW Teams • Membership • Extension • Retention/Orientation • Leadership Development • Women’s Membership & Development
Where (MD-14) is today! • As of July 31st 2006 for Lion Year 2006-2007 • Status quo Clubs 7 • Membership -102 • New Clubs 0 • Districts in Transition 6 • The job needing to be accomplished is clear! • Growth in all areas is essential to maintain status • What is the situation in your District? • Is the District Healthy? • Are you growing?
Where does the emphasis need to be? • The emphasis needs to be at the LOCAL Club level • Individuals • Join Clubs • Resign from clubs • Clubs are responsible for • Securing new members • Retaining members • Sponsoring new clubs • Accepting Women as members
What is the problem? • Clubs failing to see the critical role they play • Clubs failing to change • Clubs are not aggressively recruiting new members • Younger members • Women as members • Diverse members • Not utilizing the member categories available • Clubs are content
Discontent is the first necessity of progress.
Leadership’s role • Begin to work at the Club level • Assist clubs to become DISCONTENT • Discontent enough to make changes, talking about change does not cut it! Initiate Change! • Assist clubs to accept CHANGE • Change is never easy! • Habitual behaviors must be examined • Clubs need to function in the present
There are ample excuses • Time - I am a volunteer • Tradition - This is the way we have always… • Upsetting the status quo - Members will quit • Age of members - We must respect senior members, they brought us to this point • If we accept the excuses, we merely • Delay the inevitable
Change • Change occurs by two methods • Evolution • Revolution • Evolution • The preferred manner in Lions • Occurs through “education” (Your role) • Revolution • Occurs through frustration • Sometimes the only way change will happen • Tends to be messy, hurt feelings, anger, & defection
“Building a Plan for Success” • This afternoon the schedule calls for you to work on a District Plan • How should you approach this task? • Review last year’s plan (Will be shared with you) • Identify what happed last year. • What worked • What did not work • Take what worked and build (refine) upon it • Take what did not work and discard or make it workable • IP Ross plan, part of the “New Paradigm” • Focus on a plan that reaches the level (local clubs) where it will make a difference
Avoid the following • Continuing to “preach to the choir” • Talking mostly to the District Cabinet • Reports do not yield accomplishments • Accomplishments make reportable information • Not identifying specifically who will do what & when • Thinking it is the Governor’s job • Thinking it is the Vice-District Governor’s job • Thinking the Zone Chairpersons will do it
Do the following • Be honest about the District situation • Prioritize - What are the critical issues • Establish “SMART” goals • Specific - Who is going to do what? • Measurable - Can you count it, see it, prove it? • Actionable - Do you have the needed resources? • Realistic - Is it possible? • Time-bound - By when?
Do the following (continued) • Attempt to reach clubs with greatest needs • Low membership, high average age, no women, limited service activity, no fund raisers • Repeat, repeat, repeat opportunities • Doing a single session at the District Convention is inadequate • Contact directly Clubs with needs • Attend meetings with an informational program • Meet with club leadership (formal & informal)
Do the following (continued) • Put articles in the District Newsletter • Initiate recognition programs, contests • Push the “PA Membership Plan”, offer to assist in implementation • Build a District “Team” committed to implementing the “Plan” - PDGs are a resource • Utilize LCI resources, printed material, self study courses, LCI “The Lion” articles
Remember • It is about SERVICE! Not numbers! • It takes active clubs in communities with • Active members in those clubs To provide SERVICE to those in need in our communities, Districts, Multiple District & World
Will you do the job? • You agreed to do when you accepted a District MERLOW chairperson role? • Do you believe IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME.
Remember! If you are not part of the Solution, Then you are part of the Problem.
Thank you! Good luck in building a plan for your District, a plan that will make a difference. A difference in the amount and quality of SERVICE provided in the name of LIONS in your communities, in your District & the world.
