I’m an asymptote….Can’t touch this! Maegan Grady
Colorful Crime • Can you figure out what color hat the bank robber was wearing. But remember one thing: one of the brothers always tells the truth, and the other always lies — and we don't know which is which. After a bank robbery, two guys ran out of the bank. One was wearing a red baseball cap. The other was wearing a blue baseball cap. The police didn't know which one was the criminal. Luckily, Jake saw the robbery and could tell the police what color hat the robber was wearing. Jake's brother Joe later told their sister, Jenny, what happened. "Jake said the robber was wearing a red hat," he said.
Answer • The bank robber was wearing a blue hat. Say Jake is the liar and Joe is the truth-teller. That means Jake actually did say that the robber was wearing a red hat. But whatever Jake says is false, so the robber's hat was blue. • Now let's say that Joe is the liar and Jake is the truth-teller. That means that Jake really told his friends that the robber was wearing a blue hat. And since Jake always tells the truth, the robber's hat was, indeed blue. The answer is blue — either way
Learning Targets • I can describe the behavior of a function on a graph over a given interval. (up (increasing), down (decreasing), minimums, maximums, intercepts, the range, the domain, end behaviors, asymptotes etc.) • I can compose a situation in life that a function might be used, and can determine what would be the inputs and outputs.
Increasing or Decreasing? A function increases if the y-value increases as the x-value increases. A function decreases if the y-vaules decreases as the x-value increases.
Maximum or Minimum? Minimum- The smallest value of set, function, etc. Maximum- The largest value of a set, function, etc.
Intercepts and Asymptotes….OH MY! Asymptote is a line that a graph gets closer and closer to, but never touches or crosses it.
What Kind of Function am I? • Polynomial vs Absolute Value
This type of behavior won’t get you a time out! • End Behavior • The appearance of a graph as it is followed farther and farther in either direction. For polynomials, the end behavior is indicated by drawing the positions of the arms of the graph, which may be pointed up or down. Other graphs may also have end behavior indicated in terms of the arms, or in terms of asymptotes.
G-R-A-P-H….and Quadratic was it’s name-o! • Be the first to get all five horizontally, vertically, or diagonally!
IS THIS REAL LIFE?! • Can you come up with three different jobs or situations in life that use graphs?
A Riddle to make you Twiddle! • What's the Fewest? Some kids are playing hide and seek in a park where there are seven trees. One of the kids is “It,” and the others are all hiding behind trees. Of course, you can’t see them, because they’re hiding. See if you can figure out the fewest possible kids hiding, using the following information:A girl is hiding to the left of a boy.A boy is hiding to the left of a boy.Two boys are hiding to the right of a girl.
