Liquid Ions and Boron Nitride Hexagonal Cubic
Importance of AlCl3 • AlCl3 is in a dynamic equilibrium with Al2Cl6 • Al2Cl6 2AlCl3 • It has a high affinity for chlorine • This allows it to act a catalyst in the Friedel-Crafts reaction, in this case for the chlorination of benzene.
Ionic Liquids • Ions in a liquid state • Term particularly applied to those liquid at room temperature (RTILs) • Due to crystal-coordination structure (thus weak lattice) • These are rarely natural and are often synthesised to meet a specific need • They act as good solvents • Some very common ones have AlCl4- present as the anion
Importance of RTILs today • Vital role in green chemistry • Cleaner • Replaced Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) for the following reasons: • VOCs evaporate easily, but RTILs don’t • Products in RTIL solutions are easier to remove • Catalysts in RTIL solutions are easier to recover
Boron Nitride (BN) • Giant covalent molecule. • Exist in two forms: • H-boron nitride, • C-boron nitride.
H-Boron Nitride • Often referred to as “white graphite”; • lubricious material; • semi-conductor; • very high thermal conductivity; • good thermal shock resistance; • chemically unreactive but oxidises at 850°C .
C-Boron Nitride • Second hardest material known; • wear resistant; • high thermal conductivity; • chemically inert; • can be used as a catalyst.
Uses • It is a good lubricant at both low and high temperatures; • cosmetic products; • widely used as an abrasive.
