  2. During this session, the following topics will be addressed: • STAR Events general information • STAR Events philosophy • Procedures clarification • Event guidelines for specific events

  3. Introduction to STAR Events • STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition): Competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. • STAR Events promote the FCCLA Mission: To focuson the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader.

  4. Who are STAR Event Evaluators? • Student members and adults that play an important role in the success of events. • They support the belief that youth are capable of assuming important roles has been the key to the success of STAR Events.

  5. Evaluator Teams Event Lead Consultants – Adults experienced in working with STAR Events who are responsible for handling details and managing a specific event on site. Evaluators – Evaluation teams composed of student members and adults who are responsible for evaluating entries, assigning ratings to participants, and discussing strengths and areas for improvement. Evaluation teams will be comprised of three members. Room Consultants – Student members who work together to manage the flow of participants and assist evaluators.

  6. Event Time Limits May be divided into: • Room consultant and evaluator Display/File Folder/Manual/Portfolio review time • Participant set-up/preparation time • Oral presentation time • Evaluation interview time Student timers may be assigned to each room. Refer to your event guidelines for specific time limits.

  7. Recognition Entries are evaluated by a standard criteria with no limit to the number of medals given for each level in any category. Regional Recognition: • 1,2 & 3 star ratings - all 3 stars (highest level) move on to state level competition. State and National Recognition: • Gold medal (highest level) • Silver medal • Bronze medal

  9. Specifications Project Identification Page – A page at the front of a document or display containing headings specifically called for by event rules.   10. Competition Clothing Choice Appropriate dress - includes FCCLA official blazer, red polo shirts blouses, collared shirts, sweaters, jackets, slacks, dresses and suits. Costume/Uniform - Clothing of a distinctive design or fashion worn by members of a particular group and serving as a means of identification.

  11. Foundational Events Builds basic leadership and life skills. Applied Technology: A Portfolio/Oral Presentation event Recognizes participants who develop a project using technology that addresses a concern related to FACSE and/or related occupations and integrates and applies content from academic subjects. Individual or Team Event: • Junior • Senior • Occupational Allowable Presentation Elements: • Audio, Costumes/Uniforms, Easel (s), Flip Chart(s), Portfolios, Props/Pointers, Skits, Visual Equipment, Visuals. Not Allowed: • File Folders, Manuals, Photo Albums, Scrapbooks.

Career Investigation: A Portfolio/Oral Presentation event Recognizes participants for their ability to perform self-assessments, research, explore a career, set career goals, create a plan for achieving goals, and describe the relationship of FACSE coursework to the selected career. Individual Event: • Junior • Senior Allowable Presentation Elements: • Costumes/Uniforms, Portfolio. Not Allowed : • Audio, Easel(s), File Folders, Flip Chart(s), Manuals, Props/Pointers, Skits, Visual Equipment and Visuals.

Entrepreneurship: A Portfolio/Oral Presentation event Recognizes participants who develop a plan for a small business using FACS skills and sound business practices and that relates to an area of FACSE or related occupations. Individual or Team Event: • Junior • Senior • Occupational Allowable Presentation Elements: • Audio, Costumes/Uniforms, Easel(s), Flip Chart(s), Portfolios, Props/Pointers, Skits, Visual Equipment, Visuals. Not Allowed: • File Folder, Manuals.

  15. Environmental Ambassador: A Portfolio/Oral Presentation event Recognizes participants who address environmental issues that adversely impact human health and well-being and who actively empower others to get involved. Individual or Team Event: • Junior • Senior • Occupational Allowable Presentation Elements: • Audio, Costumes/Uniforms, Easel(s), Flip Chart(s), Portfolios, Props/Pointers, Skits, Visual Equipment, Visuals. Not allowed: • File Folders, Manuals.

Focus on Children: A Display/Oral Presentation event Recognizes participants who use FACS skills to plan and conduct a child development project that has a positive impact on children and the community.   17. Illustrated Talk: A File Folder/Oral Presentation with visuals event Recognizes participants who make an oral presentation about issues concerning FACS and/or related occupations. Individual or Team Event: • Junior • Senior • Occupational Allowable Presentation Elements: • Audio, Costumes/Uniforms, Easel(s), File Folders, Flip Chart(s), Props/Pointers, Skits, Visual Equipment, Visuals. Not Allowed: • Manuals, Portfolios.

  18. Interpersonal Communications: A File Folder/Oral Presentation event. Recognizes participants who use FCS and/or related occupation skills and apply communication techniques to develop a project designed to strengthen communication, with their community, employment, family, peer group or school group. Individual or Team Event: • Junior • Senior • Occupational Allowable Presentation Elements: • Costumes/Uniforms, Easel(s), File Folder, Flip Chart(s), Props/Pointers, Skits, Visual Equipment, Visuals. Job Interview: A Portfolio/Application/Interview event Recognizes participants who use FCS and/or related occupation’s skills to develop a portfolio, participate in an interview and communicate a personal understanding of job requirements. Nutrition and Wellness: A Portfolio/Oral Presentation event Recognizes participants who track food intake and physical activity for themselves, their family, or a community group and determine goals and strategies for improving their overall health.   25. Leadership Provides an opportunity for leaders to gain recognition for their work in their chapters.   26. Advocacy: A Portfolio/Oral Presentation event. Recognizes participants who demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and ability to actively identify a local, state, or national concern, research the topic, identify a target audience and potential partnerships, form a plan and advocate for the issue. Culinary Arts: A Demonstration event Recognizes participants enrolled in an occupational culinary arts/food service training programs for their ability to work as members of a team to produce a quality meal using industrial culinary arts/food service techniques and equipment. Recognizes participants who demonstrate their ability to use knowledge and skills gained from their enrollment in an occupational early childhood program.
