  2. One-Step Addition and Subtraction Equations An equation is a sentence stating that two quantities are equal. x + 2 = 6 x = 4 These are equivalent equations because they have the same solution, 4 The value of a variable that makes an equation true is called the solution of the equation.

  3. Remember these steps: Get the variable alone To do that, do the opposite of what you are already doing to it. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other.

  4. The Subtraction Property of Equality states that the two sides of an equation remain equal when you subtract the same number from each side. If a=b, then a−c = b−c Example: check x + 6 = 4 -2 + 6 = 4 −6 −6 4 = 4 x = -2

  5. The Addition Property of Equality states that the two sides of an equation remain equal when you add the same number from each side. If a=b, then a+c = b+c Example: check X − 2 = 1 3− 2 = 1 +2 +2 1 = 1 x = 3
