The Great One By Jehanzeb Khan
Introduction • Hello! • My person was once the most controversial athlete in the world. • Almost 30 years later, became one of the most beloved ones • I’m going to lead you through this persons journey.
Early Life • Was born in Louisville, Kentucky. • Early in life, was treated like a little kid. • He (yes it’s a man) had his life started after his bike was stolen from him. • Many say this happened because he was black. • He talked to a policeman about the incident and the policeman ( Joe E. Martin) lead him to the stardom he lived. • Mr. Martin helped him train, push himself and live to do what he was born to do.
Basic Info • Referred to as “ The Greatest” and “The King of the World,” • Changed his name (and converted) after being influenced by a man named ‘Malcolm X.’ • Finally became “The Greatest” and “The King of the World” after overcoming a man named “Sonny Liston” • Many people were very ‘iffy’ about his talent and that he did not deserve the title he now beared.
More info… • His opponents underestimated him for his skill and what he could do. • He was known for being fast and quick like a butterfly and striking and stinging like a bee. • This allowed him to defeat a lot of his opponents • He would sometimes before his matches call out in how many rounds he could defeat his opponent (ANY ideas yet?) • He only lost 5 times in his life. • He was known for his original quotes…
“A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.“ “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” ‘I hated every minute of training, but I said, "Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.“ ‘ “I'll beat him so bad he'll need a shoehorn to put his hat on.” “I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark.” If you even dream of beating me you'd better wake up and apologize. “Silence is golden when you can't think of a good answer.” “The man who has no imagination has no wings.” At home I am a nice guy: but I don't want the world to know. Humble people, I've found, don't get very far. “It's not bragging if you can back it up.”
Dislike…. • SO many people hated this man. • He was a very cocky person (and said to have been full of himself). • Most of the time, he was a heavy underdog and pulled out a win. • Part of it was because he was called to go fight in the Vietnam War and he refused. • This was because of complications of his religion did not allow him too.
Continued… • Many people thought this was because he wanted to keep winning matches and money. • Because of his refusal, he was given a hefty fine, banned from his sport in the U.S., sentenced to 5 years in prison and lost his heavyweight title. • After his ban, he started giving speeches and showing African American’s around the US to follow their dreams like he did. • This lead him to becoming more liked.
Becoming An Icon • Because he was banned from his sport, he began influencing people (especially African Americans) to live their life; and to not worry about what others think of them. • He even appeared on Sports Illustrated magazine. • People who thought he was a bad person (who was very cocky, and had no talent) started to think opposite; and even respect him. • He was crowned “Sportsman of the Century” and “Sports Personality of the Century” by Sports Illustrated and the BBC respectively.
