(in comparison, the deepest parts of Lake MI are 900 feet) • Lake Baikal is the freshwater lake with greatest volume in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. • It is also one of the clearest lakes in the world.

12. Asian Cars Japan is one of the largest automobile manufacturers and exporters, and has six of the world's ten largest automobile manufacturers. It is home to some of the world's largest automotive companies such as aToyota, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Yamaha, Mazda, and Subaru.

13. Forests • Parts of East Asia have large forests • Some nations of this region have not treated their forests carefully. Desertification is a problem. • At the present time, some countries must still import wood while new trees grow.

Waters • The rugged mountains and heavy rainfall of East Asia are perfect for developing water power. • The fishing industry is also a big business for East Asia using the Pacific Ocean. • East Asians also practice aquaculture catching shrimp and oysters in shallow areas and freshwater fish in lakes and rivers.

16. Oysters and Pearls The Japanese raise oysters not only for food, but also for pearls. Workers plant “seeds” of the shell inside of the oyster so that the oyster will cover it with layers of shiny material from its body to form a pearl. Only one out of 20 oysters will make a pearl.
