  1. Trivia • Which Lake, found in Asia, is the deepest fresh water lake in the world?

  2. ANSWER • Lake Baikal • 5,200 feet deep in some areas. (in comparison, the deepest parts of Lake MI are 900 feet) • Lake Baikal is the freshwater lake with greatest volume in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. • It is also one of the clearest lakes in the world.

  4. Using East Asia’s Resources • It is estimated that China has 3 times the oil of the U. S. • East Asia’s lands and waters are filled with natural resources, but some are too difficult or too expensive to obtain.

  11. Asian Cars Japan is one of the largest automobile manufacturers and exporters, and has six of the world's ten largest automobile manufacturers. It is home to some of the world's largest automotive companies such as aToyota, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Yamaha, Mazda, and Subaru.

  12. Forests • Parts of East Asia have large forests • Some nations of this region have not treated their forests carefully. Desertification is a problem. • At the present time, some countries must still import wood while new trees grow.

Waters • The rugged mountains and heavy rainfall of East Asia are perfect for developing water power. • The fishing industry is also a big business for East Asia using the Pacific Ocean. • East Asians also practice aquaculture catching shrimp and oysters in shallow areas and freshwater fish in lakes and rivers.

  15. Oysters and Pearls The Japanese raise oysters not only for food, but also for pearls. Workers plant “seeds” of the shell inside of the oyster so that the oyster will cover it with layers of shiny material from its body to form a pearl. Only one out of 20 oysters will make a pearl.

A. needs to farm every bit of available land. • Only 10% of China, 11% of Japan, and 18% of North Korea can be farmed. • South Korea has 21% of farmland which is equal to the U.S. • In China, farmers practice double-cropping-growing 2 crops in the same year on the same land. • They also plant on the sides of roads and railways.

  20. Fertile Lands: A Valuable Resource continued… • In crowded parts of Asia, livestock is rare because crops take up less room than animals and produce more food. • East Asians will continue to improve farming methods to try to keep up with their growing population.
