L/O Use the verb avoir to describe what illnesses people have & use depuis to say how long they have had them Starter : match up the English vocabulary on the sheet to the French. Some you already know, for the others you may use a dictionary to help you.

Vocabulaire • a) I’m hungry J’ai le rhume • I’m thirsty J’ai froid • c) I’m cold J’ai le cafard • d) I’m hot J’ai de la fièvre • e) I have a cold Je n’ai pas la forme • f) I have the flu J’ai soif • I have a fever J’ai faim • h) I feel depressed J’ai chaud • i) I’m healthy/well J’ai la forme • j) I’m not healthy/well J’ai de la grippe

  3. Remember you can use the other parts of avoir to say what is wrong with other people: Eg/ J’ai chaud - I am hot Elle a chaud - She is hot FRIEND Mon copain a le rhume My friend has a cold

  5. DEPUIS - Since Depuis means since in French. You can use it to say when your illness started: Eg/ J’ai le rhume depuis lundi I have had a cold since Monday Eg/ J’ai le rhume depuis deux jours I have had a cold for two days Eg/ J’ai le rhume depuis une heure I have had a cold for an hour NB. In English this construction uses the past tense but in French it uses the present tense – don’t get confused!

Show me you understand! • I have felt depressed since Tuesday • I have had a fever for three days • I have had a cold since Saturday. • She has had the flu for four days. • My brother has had a cold since Thursday. • My Mum has had a sore throat for a week. She is hungry but she is also quite depressed. • I have had a headache since Tuesday and my stomach hurts as well. Add 3 more of your own in English and French
