MISSION STATEMENT • The mission of Beckwith Residential Support Services(BRSS), within the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services(DRES), at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is to provide resources for housing, personal assistant, and disability services to BRSS residents in a manner that will assist them in the attainment of their personal and educational goals. • Independent Living is thus defined as the right of people with disabilities to control and direct their own lives and to participate actively in society • To control and direct one’s life means making cultural and life style choices among options that minimize reliance on others in decision making and in performance of everyday activities, limited only in the same ways that people without disabilities are limited. It means exercising the greatest possible degree of choice about where you live, and with whom to live, how to live and how to use time. This includes taking risks and having the right to succeed or fail. It also includes taking responsibility for one’s decisions and action.

BRSS plan • Dedicated to facilitating the transitional needs of students with severe disabilities and offer assistance with activities of daily living to accommodate their participation in the academic and extracurricular programs and activities at the University of Illinois. • The residential, educational, and transitional objectives of Beckwith Residence Hall are: • To accommodate the residential needs of students with physical disabilities who require the services of personal assistants to successfully perform ADL’s. • To promote maximal functional independence on the parts of residents with disabilities, and whenever possible, to facilitate their transition to mainstream community housing.

  5. BECKWITH RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT SERVICES • First floor Nugent hall designed for accessibility • Comprised of private sleep study rooms, hands free entry, adaptable furniture, lift system in each room. • Capability of housing 24 residents. • Lounge and sleep study rooms are WIFI ready

  6. BRSS STAFF AND SERVICES • Staff consists of Resident Director, Assistant Resident Director, Disability Specialist, two Disability Advocates(DA), and Personal Assistants. • Resident Directors and DA’s are responsible for implementing policies, facilitating emergency plans, and assisting with social and recreational programs of students. • Personal Assistants are responsible for assisting the students with their activities of daily living(ADLs) and are supervised by the resident in conjunction with the BRSS administrative staff.

BRSS PROGRAMS • Personal Assistant services to students with disabilities including: recruiting, screening, hiring, training, and supervision of PA staff • Laundry and Housekeeping Services for students with disabilities provided through Housing staff. • Transitional Disability Management Plan for students with disabilities requiring personal assistant services • Social and Educational Programming

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUEST FOR SPACE • BRSS is open to all students enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. • Priority, however, goes to students with physical disabilities that are DRES clients who are presently unable to reside in other residence halls or private housing because they require personal assistants, and to students hired to provide personal assistant services for BRSS. • Students utilizing a ventilator and/or needing skilled nursing care will be required to provide their own 24 hour professional nursing care. • Individuals interested in living in BRSS are encouraged to make an early request for space and inquire with the Disability Specialist, DRES at (217)333-4602, or through the Director of BRSS at (217) 333 -3316.
