Basic greetings • Hola---Hello (If you get this wrong, 100 pushups.) • Adios---Goodbye • ʖCómoestás?---How are you? • Estoybien--- I’m good. • Asíasí---So-so. • ʖQuétal?---What’s up? • Buenos días---Good morning. • This part will be simple translation. If I give you the English phrase, write the Spanish. If I give you the Spanish, please write the English translation.
To talk about activities • In this portion of the test, you will see various pictures of people doing hobbies. Write the activity in Spanish represented by each picture. • Leer revistas---to read magazines. • Bailar---to dance • Tocar la guitarra---to play the guitar • Hablarporteléfono---to talk on the phone • Usar la computadora---to use the computer. • escribircuentos---to write stories
How to describe people in Spanish • Remember, ʖCómoes? means What is he/she like? So you will be asked to describe someone by looking at pictures and then write complete sentences describing them. • Common descriptions of people… • Desordenado--- messy. • Artístico--- artistic • Gracioso---funny • Estudioso---studious (likes to study) • Deportista---sportsminded, likes to play sports. • Ordenado---organized • Examples--- Ella esordenada.---She is organized. • Élesartístico----He is artistic.
How to describe people (cont’d) • On the test you will see various pictures of people. You will be asked ʖCómoes el chico? Or ʖCómoes la chica? You will then write a sentence describing the person from the picture. For example, if there is a picture of a male student with his locker really messy, you would write….” Élesdesordenado.”---He is messy. • BE CAREFUL---If it is a female being described, change it to “desordenada” to reflect the correct gender. EXCEPT WITH DEPORTISTA…this always end in –a whether it’s a male or female being described.
Family tree • You will see a family tree with people in it. Then you will be asked questions like “Quiénes la madre de Luisa?”---Who is Luisa’s mother? • You will then look at the family tree and write the name of Luisa’s mother.
Family tree names (cont’d) • La madre---mother • Los primos---cousins • Los tíos--- aunts/uncles • El abuelo---grandfather • Los hermanos---brothers and sisters • La esposa—wife • El esposo---husband • Los hijos---children
Subject pronouns • Yo= I • Tú =you (informal) • Él = he • Ella = she • Usted = you (formal) • Nosotros, -as = we, us • Ellos, -as = they • Ustedes = you all • Use this slide only as a review to help you conjugate verbs in the following pages.
Verb conjugation • See attached following sheets. You will have to conjugate only the verbs below. • Limpiar---to clean • Lavar---to wash • Ayudar---to help • Dormir---to sleep • Morir---to die • Remember, dormir (to sleep) and morir (to die) are o to ue stem changing verbs. Change the o to ue in all cases except the NOSOTROS form. • For example---- I help----yoayudo • She sleeps----Ella duerme
The present progressive tense. • Use “Estoy”—(I am) alongto say that you are doing something right now. • For –ar verbs, take off the last two letters (-ar) and add –ando. For verbs that end in –er,-ir, take off the last two letters and add –iendo. • Bailar--- bailando --- dancing. • Comer---comiendo---eating. • Estoybailando.---- I’m dancing. • Estoycomiendo.---- I’m eating. • You will only be tested on “Estoy” and the following verbs---bailar, comer, limpiar, hablar, lavar.
