Bentham’s Welfare Hedonism • Qualitative Similarity: All pleasures are qualitatively identical. Considered in themselves as mental states, they differ only in: • Intensity: how intense a pleasure (or a pain) is • Duration: how long a pleasure (or a pain) lasts • Thus, theoretically, we can calculate the quantity of pleasure (or pain) by multiplying its intensity times its duration.
An Analogy to Understand Bentham’s Hedonism • Remember, it is only an analogy. • It is intended to illustrate that there is only one kind of experience, though it can differ in intensity and duration and have many different kinds of causes. • Bentham didn’t really think there were bells in people’s heads.
