Background • 17th November 2010 Flood Event • 300 Premises affected • National Pot of £3m (2 stages) for PLP • Cornwall • Over 26% of national pot • Biggest individual scheme • Over 150 properties • Mevagissey, St Blazey, Lostwithiel.
What is Household Level Protection • Works for individual properties • Tailored property protection • Reduces Risk rather than preventing flooding • Not the silver bullet
Cornwall Council Approach • Early establishment of Project Board • Close working with Project partners • Weekly Team Meetings • Early setting of Strategy • Passive measures wherever possible • 600mm protection • Money into protection rather than modelling – time & resourcing issue • Local liaison • With elected members • Flood Fairs with eligible properties • With local champions
Types of Product • Doors NRVs • Airbrick Covers Larger Installations
Lessons • Explaining the market stimulation element • Speed of implementation • Supporting the residents • Post Installation Information • Insurance premiums • Still need catchment management approach
Conclusions • Don’t under-estimate the complexity. • Community response • 150+properties have higher protection • Is it worth it – definitely. • We are bidding again.
