Is a Career Objective Necessary? Today, most experts agree that listing a career objective is a must. Stating an objective demonstrates that you are goal oriented and serious about your career. Electronic resumes are almost always categorized by objective. Without it, employers may be uncertain where to place your resume and simply eliminate it. It can be an effective marketing tool. A Simple Objective OBJECTIVE: PHARMACIST • Lists only the job title you are seeking. • Is sufficient if you: • Use a chronological format. • Seek the same job as your previous one. Chapter 5
An Effective Objective OBJECTIVE: PHARMACIST—where my nine years of experience, my expertise in generic medications, and my ability to fill orders quickly will result in increased efficiency. • Lists the job title and benefits to the employer. • Allows you to make a personal statement. • Identifies what you can do. • Identifies the benefits the employer will gain from hiring you. Writing an Effective Objective • Job title. • Be specific. • Skills and experience: • Ask: "What skills and experience can I bring to the position?" • Each task or skill area mentioned should be relevant to your objective. • Your resume should support the skills mentioned. Chapter 5
