Identifying Plot • The plot of the story is the action, or the events that take place. • Some plot events are more important than others.
Plot Farmer Juan has a big problem. Every day some rabbits get into his carrot patch and chew up some of the plants. Juan reckons that if the rabbits keep eating some carrots every day, then by the time of harvesting season rolls around he’ll have no carrot plants left. Juan likes to have enough carrots for his family to last all winter, and he usually takes the extra ones to town to sell.
Juan sits on the porch in the afternoon, sipping a cool glass of iced tea. He thinks about rabbits. Juan goes into town and sits at the general store with other farmers in the area. He bores them to tears because he only ever talks about rabbit and carrots.
Juan builds a fence around his carrot patch, but the rabbits dig under it. Juan puts a scarecrow on the carrot patch, hanging from its arms some aluminum pan plates that spin in the breeze and reflect the sunlight. This keeps the crows away, but not the rabbits. One day Julie tells her husband to get himself a dog. “Rabbits sure hate dogs,” she tells him.
Juan buys himself a big, old hound dog and names it Biff. Biff spends all day chasing rabbits and howling. Biff sleeps in a doghouse next to the carrot patch at night, and no rabbit will even go near the carrots when Biff is around. Juan sells lots of extra carrots that year and uses the money to buy Biff dog treats, dog bones, dog toys, and a nice shiny collar. Biff howls in happiness.
