5710 Highland Hills Dr Austin, TX 78731 Happy Holidays2009 The activities surrounding the International Year have keep me busy traveling to the Opening Ceremonies in Paris in January, the International Astronomical Union meeting in Rio in August, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in San Francisco in September, and a speaking engagement in El Paso in October. That's in addition to helping with the "Other Worlds: Rare Astronomical Works" exhibit in Austin at the Harry Ransom Center and special teacher workshops at McDonald Observatory, Austin, and Galveston with the IYA theme. It was a special honor to be awarded the American Astronomical Society's Education Prize (that I'll receive at a banquet in January at the Air and Space Museum in Washington) during this landmark year. Highlights from the International Year of Astronomy Paris Rio In addition to e-mail, you can find me on Facebook (under my real name) and in Second Life (under the name “Edith Starship”).
Family Update Anne continues her work as a manager in the Charter School division of Texas Education Agency where she uses her computer skills to track schools and services across the state. Her church choir continues to perform amazing and inspirational music. They hope to go on a choir tour to France in Spring 2011 – a follow-up to the 2008 performance trip to Italy. Sara was selected to fly on a reduced gravity flight (also known as the Vomit Comet) in January – after months of preparation for the science experiment her team proposed, she flew and did not get sick. She also attended programs for teachers at the University of Virginia in August, and National Geographic (Washington, DC) in November. She has started a twitter account for her sixth grade students at Hutto Middle School. Ruth started high school! Ruth won awards for Science Olympiad (three second-place medals at the state meet), attended Girl Scout camp in the summer, and enrolled in the Legacy Program at Hutto High School. As part of the program, she will take her first college course (Speech) in the spring semester at Temple College in Taylor. Larry continues his interests in chess and writing. My mother celebrated her 101st birthday in November. I traveled to Ohio to spend a celebratory weekend with her and our family. Happy New Year!
