Definition of websites • A website is a structured collection of information stored on web servers, and is accessible on the Internet through a web browser. • Websites are collections of documents (also known as web pages) that have been put together by an individual or organization.
. They can be found at web ‘addresses’, which usually begin with the prefix ‘www’ (for World Wide Web). For instance, the PDS web address is www.parkinsons.org.uk
WHY WE NEED EVALUATE WEBSITES? The information that you find on the internet may not be suitable for academic purposes. This means that you need to critically evaluate what you find before you use it
Criteria in evaluate websites • How recent is the information? • When was the information last updated? • Is the information current enough for your topic? • When was the page produced? • Are the links up-to-date? • C= Currency 2. R= reliability/ Relevant • Is the content of the source primarily fact, opinion or propaganda? • Is there a bibliography or a list of references? • Are there links to other websites? • Does the source contain the information you need?
Is the site actually relevant to your research topic? Consider the level of information required. • Who is the site is aimed at (children, consumers, the general public, students, • academics, experts)? 3. Authority/ Audience • Based on the writing style and vocabulary, who is the intended audience? • Is the author affiliated with an institution or organization? • Who wrote the page? Is there evidence that the author or organization is an expert on this subject?
