Outcome-Based Education (OBE) • A set of Programme Outcomes are specified • It defines the attributes that the industry expect the graduates to have attained upon graduation. • OBE requires that the students demonstrate that they have learnt the required skills and content (exam, report, project, training, etc.)
Programme Outcomes (EE/3E/EC/PH) • Possess the relevant skills • Able to apply the knowledge of mathematics, science or engineering • Able to identify, formulate, and solve technical problems • Able to design, conduct and analyze experiments • Able to design, develop and evaluate systems • Able to use technical software or tools • Write and communicate effectively • Function effectively as an individual and in a team • Committed to professional and ethical responsibilities • Aware of the cultural, social, global, and environmental impacts of engineering • Appreciate life-long learning and contemporary issues • Aware of sustainable development
Sustainable Development • Be aware of the current good practices of electrical & electronic engineering for sustainable development • Minimum impact to the environment • Minimize energy consumption • Minimize use of resources (materials and wastes)
Programme Objectives • Programme Outcomes describe the attributes that the students are expected to attain at the point of graduation. • Programme Objectives describe the career and professional accomplishments that the programme would prepares the graduates to achieve in a few years after their graduation.
Industrial Training • Part of EAC requirements for accreditation of engineering programmes. • Employers will expect you to demonstrate a range of practical skills and soft skills. • Therefore, students must know the required PO and improve themselves accordingly. • ITP is one of the means for the University and the Industry to measure the students’ achievement of the POs.
Summary of ITP 2009 • 4-credit-hour subject (compulsory) • Who: • EE,3E,EC : Y3S1 & Y3S2 • PHYSICS: Y2S1 & Y2S2 • When: • 1 October – 31December, 2009
Report & Evaluation • The industrial training assessment consists of: • Report with description of working experience, skills, and knowledge • Daily logbook • Student’s appraisal form • Report format must follow Report Writing Guidelines • Pass/fail evaluation (passing mark is 50) • Submission deadline: 11 Jan 2010 70% 30%
Evaluation of ITP Report A. Organization-related Learning Outcome (15%) B. Application of Theory and Soft Skills (15%) C. Presentation Quality of Report (20%) D. Periodic Reports / Logbook (20%) E. Report from Industrial Supervisor (30%) The content of the ITP report shall demonstrate achievement of the 10 Programme Outcomes.
Procedure Overview • Prepare & submit a resumeto course rep (softcopy) • Course reps submit all resumes (softcopies) to coordinators • Choose your preferred companies for practical attachment • Send applications to the companies • Accept/reject within 1 week upon receiving an offer from any company • Undergo industrial training for 12 weeks minimum • During training, keep a daily logbook (see the guideline), which must be certified by your industrial supervisor • At the end of ITP, ask the industrial supervisor to fill up the student’s appraisal form and put inside a sealed envelope • Write up & submit a report to your academic supervisor at UTAR, together with the appraisal form in sealed envelope • Fill up & submit a survey form to the coordinators
Company’s Field of Industry • Companies which offer training relevant to your studies • Should be an engineering or scientific environment (e.g. electrical systems, electronics, communications, computer technology) • System design, development, presentation, documentation • Project planning, organization, execution, management • Machine operation, troubleshooting, verification, service and repair • Learning of technical skills and knowledge
Find a Company for Training • Find and obtain the following • Address, Contact No., Contact person • Refer to the company list • Search Internet • www.Jobstreet.com.my • www.JobsDB.com.my • Search newspaper job ads • Tel. no. search in www.yellowpages.com.my • Walk around office/commercial blocks • Ask family members, relatives and friends for recommendations
Submit Company Application • Download, fill in, print (use good-quality laser/inkjet printer), and send them in one envelope to the target company: • Application letter • Support & reply letter • Resume • FAQ • Number of applications limited to 5, for the first month (will be increased in the next month) • Intel application is exception – online
Support and Reply Letter • Use the template given, fill in your details and the company name and address • Print out and pass to industrial training coordinator to certify • Put in pigeon hole 3E – Francis Lau EE/EC/Physics – Ng CB • Collect from pigeon hole after 2 working days
Company’s Offer • Company shall reply back to UTAR • If offered, student have to decide to accept or reject within 1 week (please check the notice board, message, or email regularly for any offer) and inform the coordinator • If student accepts offer, print out and sign Indemnity letter and submit to coordinator • no further change of company allowed • UTAR will reply accept/reject to company on student’s behalf • You are allowed to reject up to 3 companies only
Deadline for Confirmation of Company • Deadline is 4 Sept 2009 • After that, we will place you in any companies available

Remarks • A lecturer will be assigned as your academic supervisor and he/she may visit you on week 8 – 12 • Midway through the ITP, if a student go into ES or ET status, he/she must withdraw from the ITP. The ITP will be invalid and the student must re-register for ITP after he get back to normal status.
Attitude on Industrial Training • It is hoped that students will present a good image of UTAR undergraduates • Be present and punctual at the company • Positive, can-do attitude • Put in efforts and interests in your works • Try to learn as much as you can • Ask lots of questions • Request for opportunity to involve in technical work • Consult ITP coordinator if any problem
Importance of ITP in OBE • To demonstrate achievement of POs • Technical skills • Ethical and professional skills • Teamwork and leadership skills • Communication skills • Awareness of cultural, global and environmental responsibilities in decision making • Life-long learning
Information on Extended Training • With the agreement from the training company, you may extend your training period for another semester • submit the form Application for Deferment of Study (obtainable from the 3rd floor form-cabinet) to the administration before 5 Dec 2009 • provide a letter from the company requesting for training extension • submit industrial training report on the 11 Jan 2010 • If approved by the Dean, you may continue your training with the company for another 3.5 months • credit hour for extended training period remains as 4 • As a regulation, you may be allowed to defer your study only once during your whole period of undergraduate study • Please inform the Coordinators if you have successfully obtained the approval for extended training from the Dean
