  1. Ecclesiastes 9-10 (Walking in the Divine Wisdom)

  2. Chapter 9 Outline I. THE INFINITE ONE (9:1) II. THE INSANITY (9:2-6, 11-12) III. THE INSTRUCTIONS (9:7-10) IV. THE ILLUSTRATION (9:13-18)

  3. I.THE INFINITE ONE • 1 For I considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God.

  4. The affairs of all people are in the hands of God • Seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.? (Daniel 4:25b) • 'This decision is by the decree of the watchers, and the sentence by the word of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men.'(Daniel 4:17)

  5. The affairs of all people are in the hands of God Cont • So too writes the Psalmist: • For exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another. (Psalms 75:6-7) • Jesus emphasized the same truth before the Roman ruler and governor, Pontius Pilate, when He said: • "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above." (John 19:11)

  6. II. THE INSANITY (9:2-6, 11-12) • 2 All things come alike to all: One event happens to the righteous and the wicked;   To the good, the clean, and the unclean; To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.  As is the good, so is the sinner; He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath. • 3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. 4 But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.5 For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; Nevermore will they have a share . In anything done under the sun.

  7. II. THE INSANITY (9:2-6, 11-12) 11 I returned and saw under the sun that—  The race is not to the swift,  Nor the battle to the strong,  Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all. 12 For man also does not know his time:  Like fish taken in a cruel net,  Like birds caught in a snare,  So the sons of men are snared in an evil time,  When it falls suddenly upon them.

  8. II. THE INSANITY A. Death ends every person's life(9:2-6). • 1. The living knows they will die . We know we will physically die one day, but if we die without God in our hearts, we will have no reward (eternal life) and will be forgotten by those who do. • Luke 23:43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” • 2 Cor5:8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. • 2. The dead know nothing at all . • When you die you have no more chance to gain reward in heaven that the only chance was when you were alive, when you die you will either go to heaven or hell. • The reference of the dead means those that are spiritually dead. Being in this flesh,

  9. 12th Hour (Retiring) - Compline • Behold, I am about to stand before the Just Judge terrified and trembling because of my many sins. For a life spent in pleasures deserves condemnation. But repent, O my soul, so long as you dwell on this earth, for inside the grave, dust does not praise. And among the dead, no one remembers, neither in hades, does anyone give thanks. Therefore arise from the slumber of laziness, and entreat the Savior, repenting and saying, “God, have mercy on me and save me.”

  10. 12th Hour (Retiring) - Compline • If life were everlasting, and this world ever-existing, you would have an excuse, O my soul. But if your wicked deeds and ugly evils were exposed before the Just Judge, what answer would you give while you are lying on the bed of sins, negligent in disciplining the flesh!? O Christ our God, before Your awesome seat of judgment I am terrified, and before Your council of judgment I submit, and from the Light of Your divine radiance I tremble, I, the wretched and defiled, who lies on my bed, negligent in my life. But I take example of the Publican, beating my chest and saying, “O God, forgive me and have mercy on me, a sinner.”

  11. II. THE INSANITY B. God controls every person's life (9:11). • 1. The swift do not always win the race (9:11a). • All our carefully laid plans have fallen apart; all our dreams that we had what it took to succeed in some particular area of life crumbled, and we could not understand why. • 2. The strong do not always win the battle (9:11b). • David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17-45 “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand”

  12. II. THE INSANITY B. God controls every person's life (9:11) Cont. • 3. The smart do not always acquire the wealth (9:11c). • There are elements of circumstance that have to fall together even before someone with great abilities can accomplish his or her goals.

  13. III. THE INSTRUCTIONS (9:7-10) • 7 Go, eat your bread with joy, And drink your wine with a merry heart; For God has already accepted your works. • 8 Let your garments always be white, And let your head lack no oil. • 9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun. • 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

  14. III. THE INSTRUCTIONS A.Enjoy life with your wife (9:9). • "Love your wife as Christ loved the Church."(Ephesians 5:25) • "Love your wife in the same way you love your body and your life."(Ephesians 5:28-33) • "Be considerate as you live with your wife, with respect"(I Peter 3:7) • "Do not be harsh with your wife."(Colossians 3:19)5 • "The husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife."(I Corinthians 7:3-5) • "Call your wife 'blessed' and praise her."(Proverbs 31:28-29)" • "Be thankful for your wife and realize the favor you have received from God."(Proverbs 18:22) • Honor your marriage; keep it pure by remaining true to your wife in every way."(Hebrews 13:4) • "Be one flesh with your wife in every way."(Matthew 19:5)

  15. III. THE INSTRUCTIONS B.Whatever you do, do well (9:10). • Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, thanking God the Father through him." (Col. 3:17 Phillips) • Integrity • Devotion • Prayer

  16. IV. THE ILLUSTRATION (9:13-18) • 13 This wisdom I have also seen under the sun, and it seemed great to me: 14There was a little city with few men in it; and a great king came against it, besieged it, and built great snares around it. 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that same poor man.  16 Then I said:“ Wisdom is better than strength. Nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, And his words are not heard. 17 Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard rather than the shout of a ruler of fools. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war; But one sinner destroys much good.”

  17. IV. THE ILLUSTRATION A.The contents (9:13-15) • 1. The saving (9:13-15a): By his wisdom a poor but wise man once saved his town from a powerful king whose armies had surrounded it. • God's wisdom can turn what looks like sure defeat into victory, although His wisdom may not even be remembered; it may even be popularly rejected. That is what verse 16 implies: "So I said, 'Wisdom is better than strength.‘” • 2. The sorrow (9:15b): His noble achievements were soon forgotten because he was poor.

  18. IV. THE ILLUSTRATION B.The conclusion (9:16-18) • Wisdom is still better than strength! • Wisdom refers to actions that are controlled by the revelation of God. • In Romans 12:2 Paul says, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world do not run after all the attractive, illusive dreams shouted at you constantly by the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

  19. Chapter 10 outline I. THE INDIVIDUALS DESCRIBED BY SOLOMON (10:1-7, 12-18, 20) II. THE INJURIES WARNED ABOUT BY SOLOMON (10:8-11) III. THE INSIGHTS OBSERVED BY SOLOMON (10:19)

  20. I. THE INDIVIDUALS DESCRIBED BY SOLOMON (10:1-7, 12-18, 20) • 1 Dead flies putrefythe perfumer’s ointment, And cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor. 2 A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, But a fool’s heart at his left. 3 Even when a fool walks along the way, He lacks wisdom, And he shows everyone that he is a fool. 4 If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, Do not leave your post;  For conciliation pacifies great offenses. 5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun, As an error proceeding from the ruler: 6 Folly is set in great dignity,  While the rich sit in a lowly place. 7 I have seen servants on horses, While princes walk on the ground like servants.

  21. I. THE INDIVIDUALS DESCRIBED BY SOLOMON (10:1-7, 12-18, 20) 12 The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up; 13 The words of his mouth begin with foolishness, And the end of his talk is raving madness. 14 A fool also multiplies words.  No man knows what is to be; Who can tell him what will be after him? 15 The labor of fools wearies them, For they do not even know how to go to the city! 16 Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child,  And your princes feast in the morning! 17 Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, And your princes feast at the proper time— For strength and not for drunkenness! 18 Because of laziness the building decays, And through idleness of hands the house leaks. 20 Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter.

  22. I. THE INDIVIDUALS DESCRIBED BY KING SOLOMON A. The wise (10:2a, 12a) • 1. Their hearts direct them to do right (10:2a). • 2. Their mouths give forth gracious words (10:12a). B. The foolish (10:2b-3, 6-7, 12b-15) • 1. Their hearts direct them to do evil (10:2b). • 2. The way they walk betrays them as fools (10:3). • 3. They are often (tragically) given great authority (10:6-7). • 4. They are consumed by their own words (10:12b-1 4). • 5. They are exhausted by even the simplest tasks (10:15).

  23. I. THE INDIVIDUALS DESCRIBED BY SOLOMON CONT.. C. Those in authority (10:4-5, 16-17, 20) • 1. Stay calm, and don't quit if your boss is angry with you (10:4). • 2. Woe to the land whose king is a child (10:16). • 3. Happy is the land whose king is a nobleman (10:17). • 4. Don't make light of a king, even in your thoughts (10:20). D. The lazy man (10:18): He lets the roof leak and the rafters rot.

  24. II. THE INJURIES WARNED ABOUT BY SOLOMON (10:8-11) • 8 He who digs a pit will fall into it, And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent. 9 He who quarries stones may be hurt by them, And he who splits wood may be endangered by it. 10 If the ax is dull, And one does not sharpen the edge, Then he must use more strength; But wisdom brings success. 11 A serpent may bite when it is not charmed; The babbler is no different.

  25. II. THE INJURIES WARNED ABOUT BY SOLOMON (10:8-11) He cautions concerning • A. Digging a well, lest you fall into it (10:8a) • B. Demolishing an old wall, lest a snake bite you (10:8b) • C. Working a quarry, lest the stones crush you (10:9a) • D. Chopping wood, lest the axe strike you (10:9b-10) And those are often most forward to offer help, who are least aware of the difficulties, or the consequences. The same remark is applied to the church, or the body of Christ, that all the members should have the same care one for another

  26. III. THE INSIGHTS OBSERVED BY SOLOMON (10:19) • 19 A feast is made for laughter,       And wine makes merry;       But money answers everything.

  27. III. THE INSIGHTS OBSERVED BY SOLOMON (10:19) • A. A party gives laughter (10:19a). • B. Wine gives happiness (10:19b). • C. Money gives everything (10:19c).

  28. Advantage of walking in DIVINEWISDOM • It will keep us from the paths of sin, which lead to ruin, and will benefit us more than all the wealth of the world. • Those who walk in DIVINEWISDOM will be blessed of the Lord in this life, and will dwell in the glorious presence of the Lord throughout eternity. • Not until a person has been born again into God's kingdom will he be given DIVINE WISDOM, and only then will he come to love the knowledge of the Lord. • The believer has changed masters. At one time he was a servant of sin, but now he is a servant of righteousness. Rom. 6:17-23. • The Lord will bless those who have surrendered their lives to Him, and will give them wisdom in their daily walk.
