  2. The Tenth Commandment • Exodus 20:17You shall not covet your neighbour’s house;you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife,nor his male servant,nor his female servant,nor his ox,nor his donkey,nor anything that is your neighbour’s.

  3. Covetousness, Envy, Jealousy • Covetousness and envy are the same thing. • Jealousy is another thing, refers to a heart attitude of responsible and righteous commitment. • It is • an essential part of love. • a commitment to have and to hold and to protect. • an attribute of God. • Exodus 20:4-5You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.(see also 2 Corinthians 11.)

  4. Jesus challenged covetousness • Luke 12:13-15Then one from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.“But He said to him, "Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?" And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.“

REASON • We must stop us from looking to what belongs to others for fulfilment and provision. • God is the only real source of fulfilment and provision in our lives. • Job 31:24-28If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, thou art my confidence; if I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much; if I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; and my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand: this also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

  6. CORE OF COVETOUSNESS • To believe that we need for our fulfilment, what belongs to another. • Lucifer coveted the inheritance of the saints. • Isaiah 14:12-14 • How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!For you have said in your heart:'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' • Like Lucifer the covetous person seeks to usurp in the life of another. • Instead of making room and giving honour, the covetous seek to take over and even consume the lives of others.

  7. THREE DIRECTIONS • PossessionsThis is material envy. The materially envious cannot rest when confronted with the wealth or possession of another. Much advertising deliberately provokes this by promoting an image that gives the consumer a false sense of status. • Joshua 7:20, 21And Achan answered Joshua and said, "Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 "When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it." • PositionThose who covet position see in having position the status they covet. This drives much ambition and social climbing. • Habakuk 2:9Woe to him who covets evil gain for his house,That he may set his nest on high,That he may be delivered from the power of disaster! • PersonalPersonal envy seeks to usurp the identity of another. It is the ultimate in self rejection and idolatry. There are two aspects of this. These are as follows: • EmulationThis is the direct focus upon an obsession with the identity of another. • AssociationIn this the covetous seek to consume the identity of another by taking their friends or spouse.

  8. RESULT - EMPTINESS • Covetousness makes life seem void and unfulfilled.To fill this void, false conceptions of what we are and therefore deserve are grasped at. • These can take the form of obsessions, resentments, philosophies, ideologies, religions and even conceptions of rights. • These are all idols. They are based on a false conception of what we are and what is our purpose. Scripture observes this truth in Ephesians 5:5 and Colossians 3:5. • Colossians 3:5Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

  9. REVELATION OF GRACE • Covetousness is falsely seeking what is thought to be deserved. Living in grace is living free for concept of what is deserved. • Philippians 2:5-8Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. • Matthew 8:19-20Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, "Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go." 20 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.“ • Matthew 16:24-26Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

  10. RELEASE • The release is into having the values of the kingdom of God established in our hearts. • We become confident of and content with our treasures in heaven. • The vision of God’s eternal purposes becomes clear and life directing. • We become as strangers and pilgrims on earth, directed by the purposes of God. • This is how we live by faith and not by sight. • Hebrews 11:13-16These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. ... Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
