LIVER • What is the liver, and what does it do? • How a liver become fatty • Liver Stones • How the Body is affected • How alcohol affects the body • Life Style
What is the liver, and what does it do? • The liver is the body’s second largest organ, located in the right side of the abdominal cavity below the • diaphragm and above the right kidney and intestines. The liver helps the body in hundreds of ways: • All of the blood coming from the stomach and intestines passes through the liver through a large vein called the portal vein. • The liver turns nutrients from the food we eat and chemicals from the medicines we take into forms that the rest of our bodies can use. • The liver helps clean the bloodstream of harmful substances and poisons. • The liver makes bile, which contains chemicals to help us digest the food we eat. • The liver helps control blood sugar and cholesterol levels • The liver makes the proteins that allow blood to clot normally.
How a liver becomes fatty • Fat may come from other parts of your body, or your liver may absorb an increased amount of fat from your intestine. • Liver loses its ability to change fat into a form that can be eliminated. • Fatty liver disease is the build-up of excess fat in the liver cells. It affects about one in every 10 people. • Fatty liver may cause no damage, but sometimes the excess fat leads to inflammation of the liver. • This condition is called Steato hepatitis, does cause liver damage. • Inflammation of Fatty liver is linked to alcohol abuse. This is known as Alcoholic Steoto hepatitis.
Liver Disease • There are many diseases that can affect the liver's ability to function properly: • Toxins, alcohol, poor diet or infection can damage the liver • Inherited disorders may affect liver function by causing harmful substances, such as iron and copper, to collect in the liver • Viral infections, such as hepatitis A, B, C, D and E, can cause liver cell inflammation, cell death and ultimately lead to liver destruction or scarring • Tumors in the liver or bile ducts • Some of these diseases work quickly - in just days or weeks - while others take years to do damage.
Types of Liver Disease • HEPATITIS • Inflammation of the liver caused by a virus, resulting in liver cell damage and destruction. • There are 5 known types of hepatitis: • Hepatitis A: virus contracted through fecal - oral contact • Hepatitis B: virus contracted through contaminated blood, blood products and needles • Hepatitis C: virus contracted through contaminated blood, blood products, sexual contact, and contaminated intravenous needles • Hepatitis D: Occurs in conjunction with Hepatitis B, making the Hepatitis B strain the most aggressive • Hepatitis E: Similar to Hepatitis A, most frequent occurrences are found underdeveloped countries.
CIRRHOSIS Scarring of the liver, scar tissue slowly replaces healthy functioning liver tissue, diminishing blood flow and destroying the liver's filtering and production functions. Most common cause is alcohol abuse. FIBROSIS Gradual destruction of liver tissue over time. Similar to cirrhosis, it is the build up of scar tissue that slowly destroys the livers overall function. Most common causes are infection, inflammation, injury or even healing for a related condition. TUMOR A typical masses of tissue that form when cells begin to multiply at a rapid rate. The liver can develop benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors.
Liver Stones • Liver stones are commonly formed whenever an excess of cholesterol exists in the body. • When excess dietary cholesterol is present, the remainder often crystallizes into small, pebble-shaped masses • The scientists believe they have isolated a gene within the body that greatly increases a person’s chances of forming liver and/or gallstones. Symptoms of a Sluggish Liver • Chronic Fatigue • Depression • Headaches • Constipation • Digestive Difficulties • Allergies, Sleep disturbances.
How the Body is Affected • Liver is not able to filter out the toxins as effectively, other organs are affected. • Liver disease can also cause the abdomen to protrude outward because the liver can become inflamed and enlarged. • Liver disease can affect the body and lead to other health problems. When a person has liver disease, the skin may become yellow because of jaundice • Liver disease is often triggered by other chronic conditions such as Hepatitis C, AIDS or EBV. • Early symptoms of liver disease can include: • Fatigue • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Abdominal pains
How alcohol affects the body • Two Main Ways: • Oxidative stress. • When our liver tries to break down alcohol, the resulting chemical reaction can damage its cells. This damage can lead to inflammation and scarring as the liver tries to repair itself. • Toxins in gut bacteria. • Alcohol can damage our intestine which lets toxins from our gut bacteria get into the liver. These toxins can also lead to inflammation and scarring
Lifestyle • Smoking and the Body • Smoking is harmful to virtually every organ in your body. There are over 60 chemicals in cigarette smoke that cause cancerin the human body. These chemicals have the potential to affect and disturb all parts of the human anatomy. • Smoking and the Liver • Though cigarette smoke does not directly come into contact with the liver, it does indirectly affect the liver. These chemicals cause oxidative stress on the liver, which leads to damage to the liver cells and fibrosis.
Bad aspects of fast-food Although fast food is cheap it is also made with cheap ingredients which are full of fats and are unhealthy. Fast food is one of the largest contributors to obesity in people of the modern society today. • Weight-Gain Studies have found a direct link between fast food consumption and weight gain. The high levels of trans fat and calories present in fast foods leads to Obesity which can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart problems, hypertension, blocked arteries, increase in cholesterol levels, malnutrition, loss of muscle mass and depression.
Continued…. • Collection of Trans FatThe processed food used in the fast food industry is loaded with trans fat, which increases the ‘bad cholesterol’ and reduces the ‘good cholesterol’ levels. • HeadachesThe processed meat used in fast food contain nitrates, nitrites, artificial sweeteners and MSG which triggers a migraine attack. • Increased Cholesterol LevelsConsuming fast foods leads to an increased intake of cholesterol. The cholesterol molecules attach themselves to the arteries which leads to their thickening or clogging and lead to high blood pressure and heart attack/ failure.
Continued…. • DepressionDepression is one of the many negative effects of fast food. Fast foods do not contain antioxidants, foliate and omega -3s which is necessary for good mental health. Fast foods contain preservatives, emulsifiers, thickeners, stabilizers and flavor enhancers which can affect the mental well being of the person. • Excessive Sodium IntakeFast foods contain high amounts of sodium which can lead to hypertension and high blood pressure. • Sexual DysfunctionWhat we eat affects our physical, mental, and sexual health. Fatty acids found in fast foods are a major contributor to sexual dysfunction, not only does it cause weight gain but can trigger biochemical changes which effect libido, sperm count and female ovulation.
And continued… Food PoisoningThe processed meat is many times contaminated with manure which contains Escherichia Coli and Salmonella. Addictive Nature of Fast FoodsHigh levels of sugar and fat can cause blood sugar to spike and then crash suddenly. One of the harmful effects of fast food consumption is the addiction or the incessant craving it causes among people. PFCA ContaminationThe wrappers used in the fast food industry are coated with perfluoroalkyls (PAC) which prevents the grease from leaving through. These have been proven to get inside the human body and change into more harmful forms which can lead to many health complications.
