O.L.I.V.E. Open Linking in a Virtual Learning Environment
Partnership with Granada Learning • Project partners until July • Successfully added Reading Lists to LearnWise LMS with SFX button • Screen shots from development machine in Birmingham:
Usability • The prototype had very poor usability in terms of screen layout but development effort to change this is trivial, (see next slide for something we use at RH). • We see key requirement is the upload of reading lists • Addressed this by integrating the ParaTools functionality SOAP access – easy to integrate into any LMS • Time permitting we want to implement ParaTools document parsing with a possible partnership with ReadingListDirect – fits in with their managed service model • Also generate report that captures original reference, parsed reference and reference after any corrections – to improve ParaTools software – agreed to send report to Mike Jewell at Southampton
Learning Objects and OpenURLs • Idea is to generate OpenURLs from LOM • Mechanism we are employing short term is to initiate an HTTP Fetch from LearnWise to retrieve LOM pertaining to courses • Writing Parsing modules to populate the Generic Request Object in SFX. • Then use Thresholds and possibly write new Target Parsers to provide Context Sensitive Links to related library resources
Scenarios • We ran an hour workshop with library staff at the RH to determine the types of queries we would want to generate: • Based on the author of the LO find other articles/books and LOs distributed in external VLEs e.g. LearnWise at another university • Based on language code find a similar course in the user’s preferred language or a translation tool. Very common requirement in the States, (Spanish and English) and Canada, (French and English) • Based on Coverage find map resources • Based on Accessibility values find appropriate Los, (details tbc) • Based on Interactivity Type find courses that use a different media type to deliver content i.e. simulations rather than text
Preferred architecture • Build interface from LMS to Digital Object Repository (DOR) • Allow Student or Tutor to construct queries, (XQuery/SOAP) to repositories seamlessly from LMS • To SEARCH and GATHER LOM then REQUEST resources – IMS Digital Repositories Interoperability Terminology • Use SFX to generate OpenURLs to Appropriate Copy of the LO and pass back to LMS for DELIVER mechanism
DOR partnership • What our project needs is a DOR to search and retrieve metadata from • Valuable extension to the OLIVE project would be to build an interface from Granada Learning’s new LMS called Olympus to a number of DOR • Possibilities include: • JORUM+; Learning Object Network; ePrints; RESULT?; Fedora system; DSpace; RELOAD?; others? • We also need to build into project COLIS type Authentication when retrieving LOs
