  1. AUGUST 23RDHONORS II ENGLISH Warm-up: create a character chart that looks like this: 1.) Of Finny, Gene, Brinker & Leper, who goes in each square? 2.) Find at least two pieces of textual evidence to support your conclusions about either Leper or Brinker.

  2. DISCUSSION Let’s finish our discussion of your “clarification questions” on the board. Question… Review what Leper was having hallucinations about on pages. These hallucinations are very weird… and usually, when something weird happens in literature, the author wants you to pay close attention. What is your guess for why the author made Leper’s hallucinations about this?

  3. GROUP PRESENTATION In groups of 4, create a poster analyzing one of the following: • What do 2 of the following events reveal about Finny: BlitzBall, Winter Olympics, Finny’s swim record (3 & 9)? • Which Biblical allusions are present in the book and what is the author trying to reveal through these allusions? (4) • How is Gene’s internal conflict similar to the external conflict that occurs in the setting outside of Devon? (4) • Explain the symbolism of the river & the seasons (6 & 7) • How is Finny static or dynamic after his accident? How is Gene static/dynamic after Finny’s accident? • What are at least two important metaphors/similes and what do they reveal? • What’s the bigger theme about mankind, what 2 quotes prove this theme, and how do these quotes support this theme? • What’s the importance of Leper’s character? (7 & 10) • Explain the meaning of the title “a separate peace.” ( )

  6. A SEPARATE PEACE • Work on your presentations. Don’t forget to include textual evidence (quotes from the book) to prove your points. • Presentations will take place at the beginning of class on MONDAY. • Each presentation should be approximately 4-6 minutes.

  7. COOL-DOWN Cool-down: Review pages 22-23.
