iBorrow – The project JISC funded project for 200 thin-client notebooks To be installed in Augustine House, will be WiFi networked Usage will be monitored through tracking software.
iBorrow – Green Agenda • Green agenda to be promoted. • Virtualised servers with a virtualised desktop. Totally data centre driven. • Thin-client computers to reduce heat and noise
iBorrow – Thin Client Manufactured thin client laptops are: • Hard to find • Expensive (£500-600) and heavy (5kg) • Dependent on hardware manufacturers for software updates (RDP) • Requiring separate maintenance routines away from AD/SCCM/WSUS
iBorrow – Client Decisions Use a cheap netbook that: • Has small solid state drive and WiFi • Long (6 hours +) battery life • Is light and portable • Minimum of 10 “ screen We chose the ASUS 1000
iBorrow – Virtual Desktop Do we use: • Terminal Services (cheap, but not that manageable) or • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (expensive but more reliable) With either solution would use Microsoft Application Virtualisation (AppV)
iBorrow – Desktop Decisions • An ideal environment to trial the latest Microsoft Terminal Server technology • Use TS 2008 with XP sp3 (utilises RDP 6.1) • XP install would be the bare minimum • TS2008 application delivery would be via AppV
iBorrow- Development Tasks • Developed a pc client launch shell along with domain auto-enrolment to enable seamless login to the terminal server. • Programmed a TSR program to give users pc battery life over the terminal server session. • Virtualised the basic applications (Office 2007, SPSS, Minitab)
