The Real World • Television news is still important • 75% of households with TV’s watch the news • Network newscasts still have more viewers than the cable news operations • Traditional TV news programs like 60 Minutes, 20-20, Dateline, still attract viewers • Most of those viewers are getting ready to die
The Real World • Newspaper print readership has declined from 70% to 54% • If on-line newspaper readership is included, readership would rise to 70% • Newspaper readers tend to be more educated and politically active • Newspapers are still important, especially community newspapers

The Real World • Over 70% of teens and young adults use social networking sites • 40% of adults over 30 use social networking sites • 4 out of 5 US on-line adults use social media at least once a month • On-line users access 2 to 5 on-line news sources
The Real World • Facebook – 85 million users in the U.S. • Twitter – 20 million users a month • You Tube – 100 million monthly viewers in the U.S. – 6.3 billion videos viewed • Wikipedia – 60 million users a month • Blogs – estimated 133 million users – about 900,000 posts every hour
The Real World • 90% of all social media users LURK (read – observe, but don’t contribute) • 9% contribute from time-to-time • 1% participate frequently and account for most of the contributions
