“War of the Worlds” Cancelled NO NOTES Our “War of the Worlds” unit has been cancelled. Reading a 200+ page novel in under two weeks is nearly impossible. Thus, I’ve decided to change our unit from “War of the Worlds” to “The Time Machine.” Both are by the same author and they both tackle the same things…except TTM is under 100 pages.

MondayMarch 16, 2009 (3/16/2009) WARM UP Time Given: 5 minutes Imagine that scientists have made time travel possible—you can travel many years into the past to correct mistakes you or others have made, or you can travel into the future to see events that have not happened yet. Now imagine that you run an agency that offers time travel tours into the past and future. What commandments (or rules) would you give to your clients? Create a list of 5 to 10 rules of time travel. Why are these rules important to your agency?
“The Time Machine” NO NOTES Prepare for some notes; there are lots of scientific theories in this book, which I want you to understand.

“The Time Machine” NO NOTES 4D = Four Dimensions Length (Tall) Width (Wide) Depth (Deep) Temporal (Time)
“The Time Machine” NO NOTES 4D in a nutshell… Time affects everything…
“The Time Machine” NO NOTES Explaining the mechanics of how time operates is rather tricky and…time consuming. (haha) Ergo, I will attempt to explain it in everyday terms.
Time Travel: The possibilities, the pitfalls, and alternate realities TAKE NOTES The Past = events that have happened already. The Present = events happening at this very moment in time. The Future = events that have not happened yet.
Time Travel: The possibilities, the pitfalls, and alternate realities NO NOTES Time travel has been thought about for ages—what if we could go back in time and change events? What would happen?
Time Travel: The possibilities, the pitfalls, and alternate realities NO NOTES Time travel has been thought about for ages—what if we could go back in time and change events? What would happen? AllowThe Simpsons to help you understand how the past affects the present and future.
The Simpsons NO NOTES In an episode of The Simpsons, Homer constructs a toaster that allows him to travel back in time.
The Simpsons NO NOTES During that episode, Homer travels back in time to when dinosaurs roamed the earth. He sneezes on one of them, which causes all of the dinosaurs to get sick and die. When Homer returns to his own time (the present), he discovers that everything has changed—he is rich, has good children, but also that donuts do not exist.

Another Example… NO NOTES From the movie, Back to the Future, which is about a boy in 1985 sent back in time to the year 1955.
Back to the Future NO NOTES In 1985, MardyMcFly lives with his middle-class family in a regular home. His father, George McFly, gets picked on by Biff, his old high school bully. His mom, Lorraine is an overweight, depressed housewife.
Back to the Future NO NOTES Mardy travels back in time to 1955, where he meets his father and mother. His mother begins to fall in love with Mardy, not knowing that she is his mother. Mardy ends up changing events in the past.
Back to the Future NO NOTES When Mardy returns to 1985, he finds that history has been changed. His father and mother are rich and fit, and Biff, the former bully, now washes their cars every week.
Back to the Future NO NOTES Tangent lines/alternate realities…
Back to the Future NO NOTES In a nutshell…the past affects the present and future...and there is no telling how changes in the past will affect the future.
The Time Machine NO NOTES Luckily, in The Time Machine, the main character never travels to the past—only the distant future.
Chapter Review/Preview NO NOTES Just like in Johnny Got His Gun, everyday there will be a review slide and a preview slide. Review slide = what we read last time. Preview slide = what we will read today.
Chapter 1 NO NOTES [we are not reading] Introduction to the character known as the Time Traveler. He entertains guests and tells them he can travel forward or backwards in time. They get into a debate on whether or not a 4th dimension exists.
Chapter 2 TAKE NOTES The Time Traveler’s guests wait for him at his home. The Time Traveler returns, claiming to have gone into the future and stayed there for 8 days and then returned.
Chapter 3 TAKE NOTES The Time Traveler begins his story. He arrives in the future and notices that he is in a very beautiful garden. There is a white sphinx there. Creatures, 4 feet tall, approach him
