  2. Today’s Video Robotic Gymnast

  3. Debate Unit You have one minute to divide yourselves into two teams. These will be your teams until Winter Break! Each team should have 11 people. Make sure to include anyone who is absent.

  4. Topic #1 Should the United States have universal healthcare? Team 1 – Affirmative Position (Yes we should) Team 2 – Negative Position (No we shouldn’t)

  5. Topic #2 Should the United States cut military spending? Team 1 – Affirmative Position (Yes we should) Team 2 – Negative Position (No we shouldn’t)

  6. Computer Research • Next week your team will further split into two smaller groups: The “Opposition Research Team” and the “Candidate Support Team” Both smaller teams will be researching the topics. • You will need to cite your evidence on source cards as you would for a research paper.

  7. Candidate Support Team • This smaller group of 5-6 people will be researching evidence that backs up the “affirmative argument” • If you are on Team one, this is your candidate’s position. If you are on Team 2 it is your opponent’s position. • Even if your candidate does not support this argument, you will still be researching it. You need to know what the opponent will say!

  8. Opposition Research Team • This group of 5-6 people will be researching evidence that backs up the “negative argument” • If you are on Team Two, this is your candidate’s position. If you are on Team One it is your opponent’s position. • Even if your candidate has the opposite position you will still be researching it. You need to know what the opponent will say!

  9. Computer Lab 44 Friday, November 1 Research Topic #1 (Universal Healthcare)Each person needs to have 10 “evidence cards” for Topic #1 by November 8. Friday, November 8 Research Topic #2 (Military Spending)Each person needs to have 10 “evidence cards” for Topic #2 by November 15.

  10. Evidence Cards • Write your fact that backs up whichever position you are researching on an index card. • Each evidence card needs to be accompanied by a source card to ensure your facts come from a reputable source!

  11. Putting it Together Friday, November 15 Within your research teams you will form arguments and back them with supporting evidence – Each research team will complete a “brief” for both topics.

  12. Mock Debate Friday, November 22 The “Candidate Support Team” will choose one person to be the candidate for their side. This is the person who will participate in the final presidential debate. The “Opposition Research Team” will choose one person to act as the Mock Opponent for the dry run that will take place on December 13.

  13. Mock Debate Tuesday, December 3 The NASH Debate Team will be traveling to MMS and host a debate for you to watch. You will score the debate using the same judging sheets that will be used in the final debate.

  14. Mock Debate Friday, December 13 The “Candidate” and the “Mock Opponent” will stage a mock debate for your team. Other team members will prep the candidate and give feedback for the real debate on December 20.

  15. Final Debate! Friday, December 20 The candidates chosen from both “Candidate Support Teams” will face off in a final debate!
