Respond to Others’ Writing • Objectives: Students will generate thoughtful comments as feedback to classmates. • Focusing Question: How do readers respond thoughtfully to authors? • Strategy: To provide constructive feedback on one another’s published work by commenting online using questions as prompts.

  2. Mini Lesson • Readers’ comments are meaningful, specific and respectful: • I really like how you… • I could relate to what you wrote about … because… • The best part of your piece was… • I was wondering…

  3. Writer’s Work Time • Read a classmate’s memoir in the Online Classroom. • Notice something in the published piece that you react to as a reader. • Use the sentence starters to write a thoughtful comment. • Write the comment on Respond to Others’ Writing (Handout 6.5a) or Post a comment online that begins with that sentence starter. • Support your statements with specific references to the text of the published piece. • Read another classmate’s piece and comment in the same way.

  4. Lesson Summary • What comments are constructive? • How did my comments inform the writing of others? • What comments inform my writing?
