International Participation welcomed • Possibilities for “start-up” funding for scientists moving to Europe ( 500,000 € Starting and 1mill € for Advanced Grantees • Grantees may maintain affiliation with home institute outside Europe ( “significant part” of worktime, however, must be in Europe) • Individual team members can be based outside Europe • Mobility – The grant goes with the Grantee (within Europe) • In current projects, 17% of team members are from non-EU, non-associated countries (42 countries involved – including Taiwan)

H2020 - 3 Priorities: Intelligent, Sustainable and Inclusive Growth Targets: • 75% of the population aged 20-64 should be employed • 3% of the EU GDP for Research and Development • 20-20-20 climate/energy targets • Better Education • Reducing Poverty No thematic research programmes – rather interdisciplinary Societal Challenges

  26. In the Beginning…. • (2010/2011) – SSH lost in translation • There was no SSH-driven Challenge foreseen for the 8th Framework Programme. • The objective was to exclusively MAINSTREAM SSH into all Societal Challenges and other Programme areas

  27. The State of the Art – as of October 2012 Split of the 6th Challenge (Council Proposal 31. May) into • EUROPE IN A CHANGING WORLD – INCLUSIVE, INNOVATIVE AND REFLECTIVE SOCIETIES and introduction of the • 7th Challenge: Secure Societies – Protecting Freedom and Security of Europe and its citizens SSH is a horizontal component of Horizon 2020

The 3 Pillars of „Understanding Europe in a changing World“ Inclusive Societies - activities include: promotion of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth; building inclusive societies and environments; Europe as a global player; closing the innovation gap in Europe Innovative Societies – activities include: strengthening and supporting the evidence base of the Innovation Union and ERA; new forms of innovation – including social innovation and creativity; promote societal participation in research and innovation; promote international cooperation;

The New Pillar – Reflective Societies Reflective Societies – cultural heritage and European identity - activities include: Study of European heritage, memory culture, identity (including archives/museums, cultural & scientific collections); Research into European countries’ and regions’ history, literature, art philosophy and religion and how these have informed contemporary European diversity; Research on Europe’s role in the world, on mutual influence and ties between the world regions and a view from outside on European cultures.

  31. How can you prepare for Horizon 2020 … (1) The Specific Programme will establish the foundation for the future Work Programmes of the 6th. Challenge. Close monitoring of the developments of the Specific Programme (http://ec.europa.eu/research/horizon2020/index_en.cfm?pg=h2020-documents)

  32. 2. Stay in touch… As the making of HORIZON 2020 progresses, stay in touch with the NCPs in regard to the thematic developments of HORIZON 2020!!!

  33. Everything is still in flux But… the seperation and the strengthening of the 6th Challenge seems to have reached a certain degree of stability.

  34. What remains uncertain The BUDGET!!! NET4SOCIETY Green Paper proposes a budget of at least 5% or 5 billion Euro!!! (Based on the experiences in FP 7, new areas of research and and the size of the European SSH research community)
