Academic Shock- recommendations 2011/12 Content of induction – buddy system, what’s OK and not OK; Changes to personal tutoring Study skills in critical thinking, academic writing, referencing upfront but think about critical reading before writing! Formative piece of academic writing compulsory y VLE need to build in tasks with deadlines and incorporate into teaching sessions (issue with length of time between face to face contact)

Recommendations 2012/13 y Socialisation imperative- extended induction including social trips with further social events throughout the year planned y Support systems- increased 1:1 contact with personal tutor (over and above University requirements) with formalised recording of issues and actions y Introduction of journal club -with programme timetabled sessions y CPD event for staff to further explore cultural and language barriers yGlossary of terminology being extended
