  2. UMC Initiative • UMC goals are to manage and disposition materials, equipment, and chemicals with no designated future mission, and prevent future accumulations of UMC: • Radioactive sources • Scrap metal • Chemicals • Waste not covered • Funded D & D operations not covered 2

  3. Target Dates • Site specific plans due June 30, 2006. • Inventories of UMC in place September 30, 2006. • Progress Reports to S-3 or NA-1 November 15, 2006 and annually • Complete removal of all UMCs in your 2006 inventory by September 30, 2011. 3

  4. Status Update • Arnie Edelman preparing report for D. Gorman and R. Orbach, site plans will be shared or posted on Web after report issuance. • All sites have annual reports completed. • Not all sites have developed site inventories. • ~ 10 sites identified some level of UMC present. Most of these were Office of Science sites. • Other sites said they had no UMCs. • Majority of UMCs are equipment, scrap. 4

Issues with General UMC Initiative • Funding for disposal • Projects in transition to D & D • Metals moratorium on releasing clean materials from radiation areas • DOE Material Exchange Website: being revamped, new site expected operational by 12/2006 and will include capability for photographs. 5

Issues with Unneeded Chemicals • Funding for disposal – especially with project shutdowns in transition to D &D. • Variation among site offices in interpretation of what are unneeded chemicals, and what constitutes adequate management. • DOE HQ view is that chemical is unneeded only if no one at site needs it, and it isn’t needed as part of your core chemical inventory. • Turnover/ownership of chemicals when staff leave employment. 6

  7. Observations regarding Unneeded Chemicals • Lab cleanouts are eliminating many containers of chemicals. • Most sites have chemical management systems that are capable of providing adequate management of chemical inventory. • Recycling and redistribution efforts vary but could be improved at some sites. 7

  8. Site-Specific Chemical Inventories • Some site offices have asked that sites develop more/better ways to identify what chemicals are unneeded. • Increased focus on chemical reuse/redistribution, enhancing links to purchasing. • Your experiences? 8
