El Gordo is the name of a big national lottery en España. • It happens on el veintidós de diciembre, 22nd December. • El Gordo translates to mean “the fat one”. • People en España buy tickets together in villages, so that whole villages can win a share of millions of euros. It often happens that lots of people in the same village all become super rich together. • The word for lottery is lotería, but everyone calls this one “El Gordo”.

  5. Turrón is the name of a type of sweet people eat in Diciembre. It is a bit like a toffee, and it is made from almonds, honey and egg. • You get a little piece of turrón after dinner in a 2 cm2 block. • Supermarkets sell turrón. • There is turrón that is almost as soft as peanut butter, called turrón blando; and there is turrón that is as hard as peanut brittle, called turrón duro.

  6. When diciembre starts, people en España start to decorate their homes and towns ready for Navidad (Christmas). A popular decoration is the Nativity scene, with José, María y el bebé Jesús. That is how they say Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus … because the letter J sounds like our letter H, it is actually “Hosay, Maria ee el bebayHeysoos”. • The nativity scenes have all the usual extras … horses, sheep, donkeys and shepherds. In some parts of España they also have el caganer. That is a shepherd in the corner having a poo!

  7. Nochebuena. Say after me, “not chay bwena.” It literally means the good night, but we call it Christmas Eve. • En España most people eat their main Christmas meal on Nochebuena, in the evening with their familia. Some familias have turkey which is called Pavo. Others have seafood, mariscos in Spanish. • After dinner most familias go to midnight mass at church. It is called “La Misa Del Gallo” which translates as “The Mass of the Rooster.”

  8. Nochevieja. Say after me, “not chay bee eha.” It literally means “Old night”, but we call it New year’s Eve. • Fiesta means party en español. An important part of every fiesta de nochevieja is eating 12 lucky grapes at midnight … medianoche. • Grapes are called “uvas”, and these doce (12) grapes are called “las uvas de la suerte.” That means “the grapes of luck.” People make a wish for each uva that they eat.

El Día de los Innocentes is on el veintisiete de diciembre, 27th December. • El Día de los Innocentes is like our April Fools’ Day because people play tricks and jokes on each other, like swapping the sugar and the salt. • Los niños, the children, knock on doors around the town, singing Christmas songs and asking for sweets. • In one town called Ibi, not far from Benidorm, they have a massive fight with flour and eggs!

  10. Say after me, “los ray yes magos.” It means “the kings magicians” and it is what people en España call the 3 wise men. • Los Reyes Magos don’t come until el seis de enero, the 6th of January. This is a shame for los niños, the children. Why? Because it is Los Reyes Magos who bring the presents. Then los niños have to go back to school. Papa Noel is Father Christmas. Papa Noel might just bring one present on Christmas Eve, Nochebuena. Los Reyes Magos bring most of the presents.
