The Battle of San Juan Hill Overview On July 1, 1898, on the island of Cuba , a battle emerged in Cuba: the battle of San Juan Hill (the actual name is the Battle of Kettle Hill, but a news reporter changed it). The Battle of San Juan Hill was the most recognized and bloodiest battle in the Spanish-American War.
The Battle of San Juan Hill The Spanish Army was on top of Kettle Hill; they were unleashing every thing they had on the Americans. The Americans were immobilized at the bottom of Kettle Hill. Theodore Roosevelt (who was colonel at the moment) had ordered his men to assault Kettle Hill and capture it. They stormed up the hill; most of the American troops however were killed by Spanish snipers. They still managed to get on top of the hill.
The aftermath of the battle When the American Army had started, they originally had 8,000 men along with 443 Rough Riders (the Rough Riders were average men who volunteered and they could ride on horse back well). The aftermath was 205 killed and 1,108 wounded. The Spanish however started out with 750 men. Their death toll was only 58 dead, 170 wounded, and 39 captured, However, Americans gained control over the Caribbean Island (Spain owned it before the war).
How the Spanish-American War changed the US? The Spanish-American War changed the US because when they emerged from the war, they became a major military power and they played a big role in the economic affairs of the world. Because of those reasons, it gave the nation a new found respect from other nations of the world.
